Just been looking through the ads, it appears I can pick up an 04 -05 Cherokee 2.5 or 2.8 diesel between £4K-£5K with less than 40,000 miles on the clock..

Are they any good or should I steer clear ?

I cannot help you here. My Jeep experiences are from the U.S. and those engine options were not built/available here.

The 2.5 will be manual only. The later 2.8 was available as manual or auto.

Not bad old things but not particularly economical.

Chryslerben will probably stick his head in shortly to give some better advice. The worst thing with these cars is the cost of glow plugs for them.

Did somebody mention my name biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Their great offroad and not bad on road, depending on what your used to driving they may feel somewhat "agricultural".

Downsides to them are with the ever increasing cost of diesel the 2.8 isn't particularly frugal, you will as roo mention find the cost of some parts ridiculous but that appears just to be a generic jeep thing now.

Plus sides really capable bit of kit, suprisingly swift with good towing weights. There's alot of accessories and parts available both in the uk and us to mod and maintain these so ownership doesn't need to be a chore. Also a good club scene with jeeps so plenty of oppurtunity to get off-road if that's your thing.

My currant 4x4 steed is a 3rd Gen Hilux Surf 3.0td of 1997 vintage with over 140k on the clock and still going strong, after 4 years of abuse pulling a large twin axle caravan or a two ton trailer.

My first thought was a land Cruiser Colorado, but any that are in my price range have intergalactic miles.

It's the low miles thats drawing me to the Cherokee, I know it's a bit lighter than my Surf, but a 2.8 should pull the caravan ok ?

Cant really help with the diesel aspect, but we have been running a 2003 cherokee 3.7 petrol for nearly 3 years, and its been utterly reliable. I don't think the diesel is terribly economical, you might be worth looking around for a petrol one, they tend to be cheaper to buy and the V6 pulls like a train. if you get a pre 2006 one its only £260 to tax

Well, these days ours is mostly stuck in town, in traffic so 14mpg is typical, however a couple of freer running trips will lift that to 17mpg, I have seen mid-high twentys when driven steadily on a run. We used to live in a more rural spot and back then it would hover around 20mpg.

I think the wheel alignment is a bit out at the moment and so once fixed it might improve a bit!

The old Surf returns about 20mpg when towing and 27mpg on a long run

I guess it depends how far you drive too.

just browsing AutoTrader, local to me there is a 2002 3.7 in limited trim with 63k for 2895, and a 2003 2.8 crd in sport trim with 65k for 3900. the £1000 difference would pretty well cover the difference in mpg. plus the limited is a much nicer place to sit. Before we bought the cherokee, we looked at a dodge nitro with the same 2.8 crd, and the typical on off turbo boost thing wasnt as pleasant to use as the v6

One thing you might notice is the relatively poor boot space in the cherokee compared to your surf I would imagine.
