Cheap iRoc-Z Camaro
Discussion
Hi guys, Iv been offered what seems like a cheapish price for a 1987 Camaro 'Iroc-z' with red interior and T-Top. I'm just wondering what these are like in terms of a bit of cheap fun til it goes bang?
Its the 5.7 'port tuned injection'. Iv been offered it through a friend of a friend whos unit is being knocked down and has to sell this along with 14 other cars.
From what we can tell it needs a bottom door hinge and a maf sensor other wise its MOT'd til May an Taxed til March.
Any thoughts or experiences would help!
Thanks guys!

Assuming that it has it's original throttle body, the MAF sensor itself is usually a very robust component. Is the check-engine light on? Is it giving you a MAF code? More frequently, it is the sensor burn-off relay that throws the code, not the sensor.
Also check MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor, which very frequently points to an air leak in the throttle body, where the main spindle goes through the housing. This is caused by wear from the steel spindle interacting with the alloy body. After-market TB's have bushings installed to prevent this wear issue. The symptom is usually stumbling on idle and sluggish pick-up (or stalling if badly worn) when the throttle is opened. Squirt a bit of Eezi-Start around the cable side of the throttle spindle with the motor idling. If the motor picks-up, it's leaking.

You can get cheaper parts if you buy direct from the US from places like Rock Auto.
From experience, I would have to say that it is often better to pay far more for a good condition sorted car than mess round trying to do up a car that will never be more than average as by the time you're finished with shippping costs and VAT, the economics don't look half as attractive.

Depends if it is a 5.7. Many are "believed to be" 5.7s butby far the majority were 5.0s. You'll need decode the VIN.

Checked the vin on that site and it comes back on there as a 5.7 TPI aswell.
But noticed today that it has an oil leak from ssomewhere so I might just get rid again as I can't be bothered with a headache.
ok so its not the right car for you I recomend a micra or perhaps a BMWBut noticed today that it has an oil leak from ssomewhere so I might just get rid again as I can't be bothered with a headache.
How bad is the oil leak? My old IROC-Z leaked fluid from just about everywhere, but I still did around 6000 miles in it and it never let me down. I only sold it because I wanted a 5.7.
As long as it's not bad, I say run it for a while and see how you get on. They're certainly different from a lot of cars you can get for that money; you'll either love it or hate it, but give it a chance.
