Cheers guys !
So no longer a ornament lol
Off for hopefully some sun and RnR Thursday
But will get stuck in on my return,
Finished the glass tail panel today, and a few bits and pieces, blasted and refinished,
Refurbished both rear lamps, which have come up very nicely, however both chrome surrounds are to pitted to use so I’ll have to buy reproduction items,
Would guess getting them properly rechromed
Would be far more expensive!

Maybe not.
But, I'd choose getting originals re-chromed rather than buy poor quality repro's. The issue is finding a decent chrome platers, as getting fewer and fewer with increasing environmental legislation.

I took some bike bits to a plater in Borough Green a few months back, if H&S or Environmental Health were to pay a visit, they'd run away screaming hehe

When working (before being 'retired') I would occasionally take/collect urgently required chrome/nickel/antique bronze switch plates from our platers based out in Essex (20 minutes from me). Our switch plates were plated on high grade, low carbon brass sheet......and the end result was exceptionally good........however the platers premies were really 'third world'. Yes, health & safety was kinda present but as you walked through large, very closely spaced tanks (separated by narrow wooden duck boards) with evil coloured bubbling and steaming chemicals and acids I became paranoic about tripping and falling in to one of the tanks.......never, ever to be seen again!. All the staff seened to wear was a pair of wellies, a heavy duty rubber apron and elbow length heavy duty rubber gloves.........a Dr Frankensteins laboratory clone.
I always wondered why there was no name plate or indication what they did......and that it could be a H & S 'thing'......but no, it was more of a security 'thing' being as they also did rhodium, nickel, silver and gold electroplating......presumably the ingots used for those would have some fairly significant value to 'tea leaves'?

What sort of prices are they now charging?
It’s been awhile since I last had some chroming done !

The last lot of E’ stuff was eye watering exspensive!
Hence thinking of Asian repro stuff!
I know the quality isn’t great but I just won’t have the funds to go silly,
Got to keep the costs to a reasonable level,
Plus repro stuff is delivered to the door so zero driving miles to find someone willing to take jobs on!

We’ve a local one in Ramsgate if they still trade
And there was also one near Hythe so I’ll make some enquiries shortly, before I order anything!

That one in Hythe did all the polishing and re-chroming work on the '61 Caddy bumpers and grille for Wheeler Dealers show that Edd China painted that lurid met green colour.....and they do a lot of old Brit bike stuff, so should know what they are doing.

The platers I mentioned certainly do vintage car and bike stuff........but here is the issue. It kinda gets out of control then as anything that needs straightening, rusting-out and needs metal/weld build-up is set to an outside specialist. I suspect a fair number of chromers operate the same way?

That one in Hythe, that NaT mentioned, do all that in house, so not all chrome platers will sub out, depends on their setup I guess. Small platers most likely will sub out (are many of these left now though?)

The one in Hythe was close to wear my mum and dad lived , we’ve a Friday shoot at Hythe in a months time so I’ll pop over lunch time a take a deco !
My issues are the pot metal mouldings have a fair few blisters that have popped and now are craters!
Funny old material but I think it can be soldered if clean enough??
There’s only 8 pieces on the car that are chrome, all small all popped!
About 700 quid to replace with repro jobbies

Gawd, I'm trying to remember now! These were all small bits, biggest was an exhaust heat shield about a foot long, then all much smaller bits. I have it in my head it was £140? All cash, no paperwork, so I can't check. First time I had used them, results were ok but to be honest I'm not sure I'd recommend them for anything you wanted done to A1 standard. And turnaround was very slow.
