£1500 FOR A CHEVY ls1 and another £1000 for the kit....
This man speaks sense - Chevy V8 over the Ford any day:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG7TUVjfcb0
Worth it for the noise alone, bonus points for sleeper value.

OH god, want!
If this was a readily available conversion in the UK and didn't cost daft amounts (like more than, I dunno, 3k - plucking a figure out of thin air) then I wouldn't half be tempted. Imagine it

Surely it would ruin the handling? Why not put a lighter (more modern) engine in instead?
The Chevrolet LSX engine series use alumin(i)um blocks, so even though they are larger than the MX-5's iron block, they don't weigh much more. Combined with a heavier rear diff and beefed-up driveshaft and hind quarters, the weight distribution on most of these V8 conversions remains extremely close to an unmodded '5. So, you end up with a well balanced, 1200kg-ish 400BHP-ish MX5, which I'm sure will be a giggle to drive.I want.
EDIT: As for modern, the LSX engines are not old American engines based on 50s technology - they were a new design first used in 1997. They might have pushrods, but that allows the camshaft assembly to sit low down for a lower centre of gravity, and the block (as I have said) is aluminium and very light for its size. These engines will also return over 30mpg in Corvettes, so for their size and power output, they are relatively light and economical.
Don't believe everything you hear on Top Gear
Oh, and don't even start on leaf springs..........

So due to the fact that the MX5s weigh.. *works it out*... *carries the 1*... around fk all, the economy when cruising ought to be pretty amazing too? Howard- said:
