Hey bro, Good to see you on here. You thinking of tracking the white one? I'm gonna give mine a blast around rockingham some time, she's still going great by the way. It's gonna be a great summer

I havent spun mine yet but i've had a few snatchy fish tailing moments that made me laugh like a maniac. Hoping to clear up the handling soon with a full alignment at maldon supertyres coupled with an inch lower on coilovers. Already put on a free flow filter. Next up will be exhaust, de-cat and 14 deg BTDC......Then i'll probably spin it.

I would strongly advise against a full cage if you're planning to use it on the road as well - been covered many times before but basically whenever you're using a full cage without a helmet you're placing yourself at significantly greater injury risk than having no cage at all.
A well positioned half cage is all good though!

Would a full cage be okay on the road (sans helmet) if it was padded out with foam or something?
Put it a different way. Would you let someone with a 2" metal bar with 1" of foam on it bash you across the head with it?For a trackday car a rear hoop is all that's required. In fact even that is overkill really as a roll-over in an MX5 is incredibly rare and severe injury that would have been prevented with a rollbar is even rarer.
Check out TR Lane for very good value trackday rollbars

MX5's are allowed to race here in NZ with a (Motorsport Authority certified) half cage too - at Clubsport level anyway though perhaps not higher championships. Thats with (FIA cert IIRC) buckets and harnesses of course, and I've only seen them do it with hardtops on.Thats another point, full cage without bucket/harness = even worse idea, you'd be amazed how much a standard seat and belt will let a body move in a crash.
Either way if a national motorsport authority is happy for MX5's to race with a half cage then I'm more than willing to do trackdays with one.

The reason for the "oh my god i need it quick" I have a trackday booked 8TH April & no protection DOH!
Are you planning to drive it like a complete nutter?MX-5 Lazza said:
Why do you need it "sharpish" if it's just for trackdays?
My 1st years worth of trackdays in my MX5 were cageless with the roof down, the last few years I only had a roll hoop. You'll see many MX5's on trackdays don't have a cage. Spun my car far to many times never ever felt slightly insecure. The biggest benefit of cages / proper roll hoops is the stiffness they add to the chassis.

Well that's a nice side-benefit but they're quite handy in an accident tooIm not planning to drive like a nutter,Having raced autograss cars since the age of 14 accidents do happen & being self employed i dont want to take any chances having spoken to msv (brands)no cage is required so panic over but im still looking if i cant find one i will just bite the bullet & get the trlane one

If the option is bang your head ( maybe ) against a solid rollbar or ( definately ) against the road surface and crushed windscreen surround then absolutely there is nothing wrong with a full cage, normal seats and seatbelts. You can buy special clips which clamp onto regular belts making them secure, I have been in 4 Mk1 MX5s and all of them suffered with the seatbelts going baggy under normal driving.
A friend of mine rolled his MGF at Brands last year when he span into the v
Clearways gravel trap. The windscreen surround collapsed partially and the two occupants had to litterally be dug out. Their faces were both immersed in the gravel trap. No rollbar fitted. Their new car is being built with an FiA spec rear hoop, which should hopefully triangulate to the bonnet in the event of a roll and protect them. Two things annoy me with rollhoops , the first is on kitcars when the roll hoop is below head height, ie Dax Rush and many Westfields!! Will defianately kill you in a roll or worse a rear end shunt , breaking your skull in whiplash. The second is as in MX5s ect, the "decorative" roll hoop. In a roll these things can bend, twist and snap possibly taking your head with them. Pointless. If you are going to have a hoop, why the hell are they not proper Steel and braced??? After 12 years of trackdays , I am very wary about driving on track without proper roll protection and at least 3 point harnesses. I am hoping to fit a sturdy FiA roll hoop to my MX5, with mountings welded on for the rear of 4-point clip out harnesses, and eye bolts though the floor either side of the seats. A full cage is not a necessity, but at least get a proper sturdy hoop! Does anybody actually make an FiA MX5 hoop like I described of do I need my fabricator to do it??

Hard Dog are well regarded but expensive now due to $/£ rate.T R Lane are more affordable although still building a reputation ie. quite a new development.
