I assume I’m not alone in finding MOT time stressful. However much you think everything’s OK, you just never know and watching your pride and joy being probed and prodded on the ramp is nerve wracking. I find myself trying to read the tester’s body language to tell if there’s a problem or not.
I went through the whole experience again this morning. First, a decent drive to get everything warmed through. A few hard stops to make sure the brake discs are clean and everything is working properly. A single front wheel locked: uneven brakes or just a low friction surface on that part of the road? At slow speed, tried the handbrake and hardly seemed to slow at all. Oh bugger, is the handbrake u/s? I hardly ever use it, leaving the car in gear when parked.
Anyway, no time to do anything so it’s off to my regular MOT garage where they don’t mind me hanging around to watch. And the result? Passed with no advisories and a comment “she’s in good order isn’t she”. Result!!
Actually, there was one small thing. Apparently, there was a split in the Y piece where the windscreen washer pipe splits to feed the two washer jets – something that must have happened in the very last frost of the winter since they were fine last time I used them. “Is that a problem for the MOT?” I asked. “Well, they work OK if I keep my finger pressed on it” replied the tester. Which is why I tend to go back there every year. (And of course I fixed the washers within the hour.)
So, she might not be the prettiest MX5 on the road, but she’s good for another 12 months!
