Is this the one...my mx5!
Discussion
Some advice appreciated, usual story of mission creep ... started looking for £1.6k mk1 eunos/mx5 and then came across this ... a 2000X 116k MkII limited edn, black with black leather for £2300, 12 mth mot. Love the look but the car does need some work and I'm concerned that not having seen other MKIIs of a similar vintage whether what is tlc and what is indicative of neglect!
There seems quite a bit of underbonnet rust on ancillary brackets and pipe work, e.g the brackets holding the rad are pretty much covered in rust, pas fluid reservoir, bar across front of engine bay...at least no sign of a front end collision !!
1st owner did 92k in 5 years last owner (female!!) had done 20k in 5 years hmmm!, needs brakes and service all round (confident on mechanicals myself), hood good, leather good. Mazda SH for 92k, then a couple of paul sheard invoices, all mots.
There's some evidence of rust on near side back sill and a trace on the arches but I understand this is not uncommon/inevitable at some point?
The phrase "a cheap tatty car is never cheap enough" is ringing in my ears, however with a good service/elbow grease I can't helping feeling this is good value. What do others think, do prefer the mkII look to be honest, decent MK1 MX5's seem to be selling fast at the £1700 level, this would be a mkII for a few pennies more...discuss !!
Thanks, Ian

I saw similar amounts of rust to what you described on some 2003 cars I looked at, I did find a non-import 2003 with no rust, not sure if you'd find a rust-free 2000 car and I'm not sure how serious rust under the bonnet or on the wheel arches is.
In terms of value, need to what engine and spec it is to give more of an opinion. Unless it's been done recently, and depending on how many miles you're going to do, the cambelt will be due to be changed soonish I think.

Its a conran limted edition based on the 1.8iS I believe, I think I could spend a long time looking for the heated garage , arches washed every week UK MX5 example, and that most will be like this one or heading towards it. I would try and slow the corrosion down by getting the drain tubes cleaned and the sill interior corrosion proofed with dinitol.
Lots of mkI examples of sill repairs on the net but very few MKIIs, someone indicated the repairs of the MKII body are likely to be more expensive than the MKI not sure why this would be.

I got the sills on my '99 car done about 3 years ago and cost me about £275 if I remember correctly, but that kind of ball park.
They need doing again, plus the arches, which are starting to bubble quite badly now. Thankfully I've just bought myself a second car so I can garage up the 5 so I'm hoping it won't get any worse until I have the time and money to get it repaired again.
