Ok i have a stock mk1 eunos 1.6 engine in my westfield. It dynod on surrey rolling road at about 107bhp, but its just not quite fast enough, ideally i would like to take it up to 150bhp ish.

What can i do thats not fitting a turbo or supercharger (i dont have the money for that yet)

I don't know how you'd get a NA 1.6 up to 150 bhp, but I'd say that if you can't afford to go for FI then you definitely can't afford to achieve that figure with NA.

fair enough, the FI thing will be done but the engine bay is tight in the westfield so it needs more consideration. What mods can i do to up the power on the stock engine?

Ditch the 1.6 for a 1.8.

Probably pick one up for £400, sell the 1.6 for £250 then its a cheap swap. Try and geet a later model 1.6 with a 6 speed box and lsd rear diff.

Jobs a good un and wont cost you the earth.

I have a pretty decent 1.8is. But am hoping that i can build a nice MNR with the parts in a few years (when i should have a bit more time!!)

140bhp in a 600kg with driver car should be plenty fast for the road.

I bought a cylinder head (stock 1.6) off a chap near Milton Keynes who'd put twin Webers on his, and done some (fairly simple) home porting - he'd had it dyno'd around that figure.

It did only do about 20mpg mind...

A couple of people have suggested the carbs route recently. I know this is the basics, but how much gain will i get from a good air system, ecu and remap, making the throttle response more progressive would make a big difference!

mine came with a print out of 137bhp @ 7100rpm

as far as i can tell it has just a stainless exhaust, filter and a ported head from paul sheard autos

the AFM appears to have been taken apart so i'm guessing there are gains on a RR to be had just from adjusting that but maybe only worthwhile once the airflow through the head has been upped

Most Mk1 1.6s would benefit from the AFM being cleaned up & tweaked, they aren't clever things and go out of calibration easily. This would also improve economy wink
You can't do a simply "remap" on an mx5 ecu - that's why piggy-back & replacement ecu solutionsare so popular in the mx5 tuning community - there is little other choice.

If you want to get a few more horses from your 1.6 na then speak to Derek "Gazman" at Gaz Shocks as he has been looking into na tweaks and has been quite successful on his own car. It's not cheap though - you can get FI cheaper wink

I guessed a new ECU would be involvedwith a remap, would there be a reasonable gain from doing this with the airfilter and a bit of work on the AFM.

With the AFM cleaned & corrected and the timing advanced to 14BTDC you won't gain much at all with a remap. What you can gain is the ability to correctly tune the AFR and control of ignition timing so you will get improvments in mid-range torque and fuel eficiency but the gains will be small for the price.
