MX5 Gearbox issue
Discussion
Hi All,
I was test driving an MX5 MK1 1.6 with 60k on it last night. When changing from 2nd - 3rd there was a very slight snick that could be felt through the gearstick, almost like a worn synchro but without the crunch. Then when changing from 3rd - 2nd at 30mph it was difficult to get in to gear unless I matched the revs first. Other than that the car was ridiculously tight for the age.
Signs of big gearbox problems or an MX5 trait? Any help would be much appreciated as a gearbox build would probably cost more than the car!
Cheers,
Rob

odd clicky feeling going into 3rd from 2nd is normal - had it on a 100k miles box, exactly the same on the 60k miles box i replaced it with - normal in my opinion
going into second can be hard, best rev match or give the synchro a little time if you're hard on the brakes
all in all the boxes work well, better when you stick a redline oil - MTL or MT90 in them. crunching is obviously worn synchros, but if there's none of that, i'd say go for it!
remember the boxes were originally fitted to light lorries so were designed to take a lot of torque, and were probably fitted with a long gear lever, so don't be scared to put a bit of force behind the shifter
edit: once the oil is warm and you're shifting above 4k rpm it all starts to feel a lot smoother

You need this:

Common problem as the bush kits wear; gearboxes are bulletproof, so try this first.

Yep mine 'snicks' from 2nd to 3rd too, feels nice, very positive change, no baulking or crunching at all.going into second can be hard, best rev match or give the synchro a little time if you're hard on the brakes
