A dodgy cap can cause issues alright and should be your first port-of-call. From other posts I have seen on this, the recommendation is to get one from Mazda rather than the aftermarket.

Yup, gummed up stat will cause a heap of problems.

If you're in there checking it, you may as well fit a new one anyway, they're cheap, quick, and easy to fit. Again, use a genuine stat rather than non.

but here's hoping it's not the radiator or fan!

Thanks Again.
Test the fan is dead easy. Get a paperclip or something that will conduct the ol' leccy stuff.
Flip open the diagnostic box (near where the afm is) then connect GND & TFA, with the engine running. All being well with the fan it'll start running.

Just tryed that and one of the fans comes on when connecting the GND and TFA so at least I know one of them works when doing it manually.
To be honest, the other one, (Left Hand Side) looks original so not surprising it isn't working. The one on the Right Hand Side is plastic and looks much newer. Thanks mate

the fan on the left only comes on if the aircon is switched on.

Is it an original radiator? - the purpose of the cap is to open at a certain pressure to push water into the expansion tank on the left.
Ive just had to replace my rad because of fractures in the plastic top-tank just below the rad cap.

So my radiator cap might not be bust then, it's meant to relieve the pressure and piss water out. Umm, maybe the thermostat then?
It relieves pressure by passing coolant to/from the expansion tank, it should not be pissing coolant out anywhere.
