Not having much luck at the moment - another problem has raised its ugly head again tonight - so i turn to you lot yet again!!!

This one is more than a niggle though and sounds pretty poorly!

Basically its a knocking sounds coming from the rear of the car - from the drivers seat it sounds like its coming from behind and slightly to the left and from underneatht he car.

The best description I could give woudl be that it sounds as if somethign is stuck to the axle and each time it rotates it his the bottom of the car.

The noise does not happen at all if you have any pressure applied to the accelerator.

I can't get the noise to happen if i'm not moving.

But if i'm moving at any speed and no pressure is on the accelerator then the banging / knocking starts.

Happens in both reverse and forward.

Any ideas? (i'm imagining bad things for this one)

Cheers

Could be lots of things I suspect.

Brake pads moving about
CV joint (Apparently it does have them on the rear...)
Exhaust knocking on the body (broken mount)
Exhaust heat shield
Something wrapped around the prop/drive shaft(s)

I'd be looking for anything not as attached as it used to be underneath as a starting point.

Thats what i'm hoping for - something loose and knocking - but i'm worried by the fact that it doesn't happen when you're accelerating.

If it was soemthing caught i'd imagine it woudl happen all the time, and if it was something loose i'd imagine it would happen at random times.

I had a knocking that would only happen when I lifted off and the exhaust would bang against the body. The engine/box/exhaust 'can' move around a lot between on power and off.

Best of luck with the hunt!

Sorted fixed and problem solved.

I'm going to need a paper bag for this one though - rear nearside wheel had somehow?? worked itself a little loose.

Wheel tightened and noise seems to have vanished.

Will go for a proper drive later to confirm.
