that would just make it thicker when cold...
if you want a thicker oil then you'd use something like a 75W-140

what do you want to acheive with the thicker diff oil?

Thicker fluid help with resistance on gears, thus more locking.

What i mean is more of limited slip diff. I used the thicker oil on my r/c car to create more reistance to slip the diff.

thought it will apples same trick to mx5...

You can't make an open diff become anything like a LSD just by adding thicker oil, the only way to do it is to change it for an actual LSD.

well if you took it to an extreme, and poured concrete in there, then it would probably lock an open diff. but i don't think a slightly thicker oil would...

i was gonna try that 140 stuff to see if it made any difference to the rattle. Decided against it on the grounds of extra heat built up and bearing wear. I get the idea you have but i don't think the fluid drag is going to be noticeable. Maybe on ice the torque bias from wheel spin would be smoother across axle as each wheel slips then gains traction, but i don't think it'd work under any other conditions

You sure that wasn't a viscous diff in your RC car? Different fluids in those could affect the amount of "locking".

Anyway it simply won't work in the MX5 open diff.

Find a TorSen from an import if you want one.

Probably a ball and plate diff in the RC car. different grade oils made them more or less locking.

Like said above, get a torsen

Do a google to see how a dif actually works and you'll see why different oil will make absolutely no difference to an open dif.
