Hellooo,

As I'm new to these forums I think a small introduction is in order. I'm Alex, 20 years old, currently living in Solihull. Driving a crappy Pug 106 independence which I've unfortunately had since I past my test 3 years ago. I'm looking to buy a MX5 in a few months, probably around May/June as I will be turning 21 then and, with any luck, my insurance premiums will drop a little. So I thought I would join this forum and try to gather as much information as possible off you experts before I take the plunge so you will probably see my face around quite a bit in the coming few months.

I will be using the 5 as an everyday car and I will hopefully have 2 - 3k to spend on the little beast. The 5 interests me because I want something fun to drive everyday that puts a smile on my face every journey, whether that be the slog to work or a trip around the country.

In regards to the thread title. A mate of a mate is looking to sell his MX-5 in a few months and I just wondered what you guys thought of it. It's a 1996 Eunos 1.8 thats only covered about 70k miles. My friend (who is an engineer) has had a little look at it and he says its in superb condition i.e. great roof, mechanically sound, very little rust etc. He has (tastefully I think) upgraded the exhaust, wheels and changed the airbox/air filter. The colour is fantastic also (as shown in the pic). However, to me, the price seems abit high? £3000. What do you guys think? Unfortunately I only have a few pics at the mo but I will upload what I've got.

I havent actually had the chance to go see it myself yet but will obviously be doing so in the coming weeks. I just wanted to run it past you experts to get an idea.

Also final quick question, is there anything in particular that I should be looking out for when viewing a 5? I know alot of people mention checking the sills but is there anything else.

Cheers in advance for all your replies. drink

Al

That doesn't look like a standard colour - looks like Nissan Bayside Blue. Looks very nice with those wheels too. £3k does sound quite a lot for one that's not had a lot of mods, although it doesn't have a lot of miles on the clock and is cosmetically and mechanically in excellent condition.

Wrestle him down to £2.5k or less perhaps?

I paid £1400 for a 94 1.8 Eunos with very similar mileage - decent service history and again with nothing needing doing to it.

I think the price is a bit / very steep on that one.

Looks nice enough but I don't think its that special to warrant 3k.

ETA: But then again i've just had alook through the classifieds and was nicely surprised, there are very few on there for less than 2k, especially when your looking at lowish mileage 1.8 imports.

I still think at least 500 quid overpriced though.

Looks expensive to me, the wheels are Watanabe by the looks of it. I bought my rust free '94 Eunos (with the same wheels) for a LOT less.

The car does look great. That was a factory colour too on some of the later editions. Think onlymx5ives is that colour too.

But I'm gonna have to with the crowd as I paid not much more than half that for a 94 import with hardly any more miles and in pretty decent nick.

I'd want 500 off the asking price minimum ideally less

Cheers for your input guys, much appreciated.

I will have a word with the guy and see if I can get the price down.

It does look tidy though and im liking the colour. Did I read somewhere that onlymx5ives is also based in Solihull?

Looks like Laguna Blue to me but I could be wrong.

£3000 sounds steep. The last 5 I sold was about 18 months ago - a white '96 with about 70k miles and some fairly rare JDM mods. I think I let it go for £2300 or thereabouts.

Assuming you could negotiate the price down, you could realise a bit of extra money by selling the wheels, but by the time you'd bought some replacements, it would barely be worth doing.

For 3k I'd be wanting something a little more special such as an rs ltd which is pretty much the best of the mk1s afaik. I might be biased though. The rs comes with Kevlar recaro buckets, bbs alloys, bilstein dampers, shorter final drive, torsen diff, lightened flywheel and the 1.8 engine. Weighs about the same as a 1.6 and feels quite punchy on the road.

That one is nice enough but probably not for 3k.

£3k seems over the top. There are plenty on Autotrader for far less.

Correct , it is a 2k car at most. And that's IF you like gold wheels on Laguna blue, which I think looks like an abortion.

Hi,

Yep I'm in Solihull I have cars from £1250 (paint is tatty 1.8 suitable as a track project) to £4500 beautiful 10th AE with hard top.

That car is Laguna blue (the best colour IMO)

If I were selling that car I might ask £2500 - £3k (can't say without seeing it) but it would also be serviced and come with a 3 month warranty.

People will always tell you about the £1000 bargain they got but a quick look through A trader reveals substantially higher prices than are discussed on forums.

Cheers for the link, very useful indeed.

Reply to Hornetrider:
I'm not a huge fan of the gold wheels with the blue but its not the worse thing I've ever seen. To be honest, I think no matter which car I end up with I will change the wheels so that's not a huge deal.

Reply to Onlymx5ives:
Cheers for your input, greatly appreciated. Where about in Solihull are you based? It would be great if I could have a look at what you are offering and get an idea of pricing etc. I must stipulate that I'm not looking at buying at the moment, just window shopping currently.

Give me a call if you want.

But most of my cars aren't prepped at the minute. no point trying to sell MX5's in the snow.

Its no where near a £3k car.

I got a Mk2 1.8iS with FSH and with less miles for similar money.

Dont pay any more than £2,200 for that.

Ah but a good Mk1 sells for more than some Mk2, and a good imported Mk1 will have less rust than a UK Mk2.

Price also depends on colour... eg I wouldn't buy a bronze Mk2 unless it was very cheap.

Rust, not really an issue, unless its very bad can be fixed for less than £500 on most cars.

Anyone who wants to buy an older car with more miles and with a worse interior and wobbles alot is welcome to buy an older mk1.

I would rather have a mk2 or 2.5 thanks
