my mate bought a limited edition mk1 used as a track car last year. i remember quickly looking under it in the pub car park, (this was intentional, not due to beer drinking beer) and i remember it was running kyb agx dampers.

he drove it into a rock sometime last year thinking it was a lump of mud on the road rolleyes

he calls me up to say it failed the mot on a cracked spring and no one can tell what brand they are. i seem to remember that the springs were orange ish but nowt else.

anyone know what the likely combinations may be?

It'll be far easier finding a needle in a hay stack

Possibly?

I suspect he'll be safer finding 4 new springs than guessing.

As Munter says, replace the springs as a set. Even if you find out exactly which springs they are, chances are the old springs will have worn/sagged and replacing the broken one alone will upset the handling.
Eibach springs are a very good match for KYB AGX on Mk1s wink

you're a chap, yes i'm quite aware it's a daft question, but since the mechanic can't tell, can't hurt tongue out

should've mentioned, the dampers were set to max stiffness, probably still are. the car is apparently 'back breakingly' stiff, so probably handles like absolute ste, plus the wheels are prob buckled and the weights gone long ago, as well as alignment. the mate has no idea really about driving, hence trying to save him money changing 1 spring.

maybe it'll just be easier to re spec mx5parts slightly stiffer front ones and hope he doesn't end up with stiffer rear to front rates!

what are the rates for those, or are they a one single setup?

Just tell him to fit Eibach springs and set the shocks to 5 - 6 on the road or 3 - 4 for the track and it'll handle way better as well as being a hell of a lot more comfortable. I don't think replacing a single spring is wise and as you don't know what rate the springs are even fitting a pair could be more trouble than it's worth.

that's true, could be more trouble that it's worth seeing as i've been appointed as 5 guru

the kyb's only go up to 10 clicks or something then?

my avo's don't seem to get out of bed until they get to about 13F 11R - like being at sea much lower

I think the Mk1 AGX have 8 clicks. The Mk2 AGX have 4 clicks - 3 is ideal for road and 2 for track and I'm assuming that the range is similar on the Mk1 shocks but spread across more clicks.

I might have got it wrong but I think with AGX it's 1 = stiffest setting and increase to soften. I can't remember if that's right or not now confused

When I had a set of NB AGX's - higher was softer. It could be different for the NA ones but I doubt it.

yeah i'm certain that on my NA 8-way shocks, 8 is stiffest and 1 is softest...

Yep, same - 8 is hardest, 1 softest. As I remember front:4/rear:3 is about the same as a stock MX5 setup. The higher you go the harder, keep mine at front:6/rear:4 for the road. It's hard but it corners so much flatter. front:8/rear:6 is even better, till you hit a pothole...
