So... having mentioned my recent purchase to my parents, they've come back with the standard:

1994? Are you mad?
That's so old!
Why didn't you buy a nice new car?
It'll go wrong all the time, you'll be stranded on the motorway!
I'm so worried!

etc. etc.

Any tips on replies? I've tried "they're really reliable, I promise!" "one person online has done 475000 miles!" "quiet minions!"

That.

Preferably with the top down. Then take them to dinner with the money you saved with the savings over a newer more boring car.

Actually, because I drive to see them every weekend (Coventry - Essex) my mum does pay my RAC subscription!

I'd just laugh them off - or ignore them. I had the same with all of my cars (one of which was a slightly ropey '89 supra)... never had any problems and in the end them realised i wasn't a complete muppet as their new merc played up more than my old 'shed' biggrin I now have the respect of the parental units hehe

My parents had similar concerns when I bought mine, soon dispelled the myths when they realised how brilliant it is biggrin

Tell your parents to enjoy their soulless Korean box or whatever biggrin

Do donuts outside their house to show just how durable it is smile

My Parents/friends had the same concerns when I bought my 1991 Eunos and also my 1987 Golf. The proof is in the pudding as they say, just prove em wrong.

I hate the term "nice new car" No such thing these days imo

PS - My diff did explode, but aside from that my car has been 100% reliable smile

Yeah, I'm going to get the same trouble from my parents, although they pay for nothing so i'll just smile and nod at them. They know better than to come for a drive with me anyway.

Damn, yeah I'm still in for my RAC membership, my phone bill (! yeah mum won't let me transfer it, i've rung up a few times but they need her to provide details!) and a weekly curry.

Dad still gives me advice but it's so skewed I just nod along "you should have a diesel... buy one of those golf gttdi ones so I can drive it... you should have bought one of those toyota pickups.."

followed by

"When I was your age I had a mini with a 1275 cooper S engine in it, was amazing, I raced people everywhere." and "I once raced my mate to devon, we did it in 3 hours (or something)"

Kids today...

My first cars were real sheds. Vauxhall Viva, Ford Cortina, Rover P6, Vauxhall Chevette etc all well beyond their sell-by dates. You are all spoiled these days with even old cars like early MX5s being way more reliable than ever. My parents never worried about me in my car because they knew I was old enough, big enough (and ugly enough) to look after myself and had good friends who would help me out in a crisis.

I think part of the cause for the change is mobile phones. If I had a car problem back then the chances are my folks wouldn't know anything about it until breakfast the next morning and by then me & my mates would have already sorted it all out.

I'd rather have a 16 year old MX5 than most of the crap on sale today.

Yeah, saying that i've just sold my 2003 Focus RS with 31k on the clock. Dad said "i'm so relieved you've sold it"

I think the only way i'd have bought something he approved of is if I'd bought a crappy diesel snotbox, and i'm not doing that at the age of 23.

biggrin

That reminds me about the time when I turned up home in my then new ITR and I hadn't told them I was going to buy it because I knew they would try and put me off.

My mum said she thought I needed "sectioning" and my dad also remarked I was mad, but I took him out in it, and after he'd finished digging his nails out of the dashboard he said "I can see why you bought it now" hehe

I'd love to do that, but I always feel guilty and tell them. In fact I always try to keep things a surprise and then end up telling them. I was planning on just turning up at mates houses in it, but i've already sent them pictures.

Bloody internet and mobile phones! wink
