bit of a technical one for you guys and gals;

My 5 speed box seems fine whether driven soft or hard unless I shift from 2nd to 5th gear - doing this results in a crunchy / not meshing gears sound ? Im really hoping its due to the linkage being worn out or something simple like that as the car has done 100k+

Can someone please re assure me that my box isnt shafted ?!?!

++++ what kind of fuel ecomony are you all getting ? At best £10 of fuel is getting me about 50 miles ? I know fuel isnt cheap at the minute but is that average or do I have other issues to address ?

thanks

Average MPG usually works out 30ish when we have those threads. Yours possibly on the better side as it'll have the better gizmos etc in the engine.

5th to 2nd is not something I've ever done. 5th to 3rd. 4th to 2nd. Are the only "cuts" across the 'box I make. But I guess you do it in other cars. If it's over 50,000 miles has it had it's gearbox oil changed?

yeah 2nd to 5th doesnt happen alot but in these icy conditions im taking bigger jumps up the box than normal. Ive only owned the car a few months so havent had the oil done myself - car has mazda specalist service history though so would hope everythings been done as per mazda specs.

I averaged 32mpg over 10,000 miles in my Mk2.5 Sport, and it was very well used - I didn't hang around.

My 2003 1.8 Nevada also crunched shifting from 2nd to 5th the only time I tried it, so either we've both got knackered gear boxes or there's a technical reason for it?

It's not a normal gear change. In theory you should take it through each gear even if you don't actually engage the clutch. They are designed for quick easy gear changes through the gears but some gear-swapping can catch them out.
