Hi guys,

I'm going to go look at my first MX5 in a bit (3pm), can you offer up a bit of advice on what to check out while i'm there?

It's a 94' 1.8

apparently

  • offside window winder cable has snapped
  • needs front bumper repainted due to a minor scrape
Other than that it looks quite nice from the pics.

How do I tell if it has an LSD (other than asking)
Where do they rust?

Rust is most likely around the sills at the rear arches.

Ask about cam belt change, should be done at 60k. Also I know the water pump is a weakness on the 1.6 and is often changed with the cam belt. You can ask and listen for unpleasant squeals from the front of the engine.

Look for interior dampness, can be a poor hood (check it) or blocked roof drains (no easy way to check these. Sills can fill with water if sill drains blocked. Rock the car and listen for sloshing.

All usual car buying checks apply.

Hard to tell about LSD from looking AFAIK. Usual test is to get both rear wheels off the ground and see if they turn the same way when you spin one.

Just got back. Right old shed. The search continues

Neither windows worked properly
He locked himself inside when we went for a drive and had to get the driver's window down to let himself out.
Exhaust was smacking against something, along with a load of other rattles.
None of the tyres matched
6 major scratches around the outside.

Not the one for me.

Minor cosmetic details smile

If it's not been cared for walk away. Indicates that servicing the major mechanicals has been skimped on too. There's plenty of nice examples for not much money especially this time of year.

This was my experience. There are some proper sheds and after a while you'll be wondering if you'll ever find the right one for you, but persevere!
