so what do you think? what's the best way to`carry a snowboard and maybe some skis on an MX5.

Luckily I do have a hardtop on the car at the moment....

What about one of those new fangled soft roof rack things?

Something like;

Not sure how you're going to get the bindings on there though unless skis are sideways with a bit of protection around the brakes (ski brakes, not car brakes!).

I've got a couple of pairs of 'proper' ski carriers on my roof rack, but that's on the Landcruiser....

Like this;

Not sure if you can get roof rails that will fit the hard top?

What about a luggage rack on the boot with skis at an angle? I've seen that in Europe before?

Or the Porsche option;

Hope that helps!

A Toast rack on the boot would do it for sure, kind of like the picture of the Z3.

Might be difficult to arrange it so that you could actualy get 'in' the boot though.

A Snowboard will go width ways across a boot rack i would have though.

Then I would go with the Ski's on the hardtop - those inflatable racks look quite good. You will find though that with the design of the window seals on the hardtop (not like a normal car door) that you will get a gap that will let the outside in!

Where are you driving to?

Stupid as it sounds, Paddy's right. By the time you've driven 8 hours you might as well rent a board when you get to the resort.

A Snowboard fits 'inside.

but seriously? I would box em up and send them on ahead.

Won't cost as much as the extra fuel you will need to burn to drag a set strapped on the car.

Roof Racks et al chew up your MPG.
Agree with PNM here.

We're driving down to Kitzbuhel for six weeks next year in the Landcruiser.

I'll be taking off the roof rails/ski carriers, and storing rails, carriers, skis et. al. inside the truck for the journey. I'll fit them when we get there for driving locally (60km/h limits anyway), where it isn't going to affect the mpg.

Well we were already planning to visit my in laws in Paris ... so thought it would be nice to get away for a couple of days snowboarding whilst we're in France already...

Had planned to take the MX5 as the M3 really could with some new rear boots (down to 3mm) and an Inspection II (well could go another 1k actually) and I don't quite feel ready to part with enough cash to buy an entire MX5 right at the moment... having said that none of those options to carry a snowboard are cheap either!

Sending it ahead is awkward as its likely to be a last minute decision which resort we go to... will just depend on the snow.

Perhaps I'll just take the M3 (it has a ski hatch in the boot) and then stick in the garage as soon as I get back.

A snowboard INSIDE the MX5?? surely not!? I was hoping to get some kind of cheap suction/ magnetic mounted board holder to stick to the hardtop but I can't seem to find one.

Not so much as rent some gear when you are there ( I wouldn't) but 'send' it ahead a week before you go : its not like you are going to need it before you get there ....

Your average Courier company can help you I am sure.

Esp. If a Snowboard in a big coffin bag. Send on 90% of your gear ahead in the bag and have it then picked up after. Lets be honest you are going to fight for any luggage space in an MX5.

Other than than, are you mad ? an MX5 all the way to the slopes?
What some people will do to get the tail out on a mountain pass biggrin

(your man there ^^^ with the Land Cruiser is the man with the plan.- I assume that is for just two of you in comfort biggrin )
Yup, 8 seats, but just two of us driving over.

Only problem with this, there's hardly going to be much 'tail out' action!

Still, the Maser on mountain roads..... nono

hehe

[Punch&Judy] THATS THE WAY TO DO IT[/Punch&Judy]

And I beg to differ.
I have managed to get the back out on my Isuz Trooper (low speed greasy Roundabout) so I am sure you can do it in a V8 L cruiser ?
You can rest assured, I will be trying my very, very best. hehe

3.4L V6 petrol, check.
Torque, check.
Fat leather seats, check.
Winter tyres, check.
Power.
Power?
Power??
Absent.

0-60 needs a calendar, although it towed a 3.5 ton boat back from the South of France with no issues at all!
