Hi all,

Been wanting to get rid of my current french rattle box for a while now and quite liking the Mx-5's.

I've done a couple of quotes for insurance and i'm getting wierd results, namely £1000 more for a 1.6 eunos over a 1.8 MX-5.

I was just wondering which variant of the car is the cheapest to insure?

(I'm 20 by the way, hence the reason for expensive insurance)

Some insurers treat the Eunos like it's an exotic import and so they weight the insurance really high to cover the perceived higher repair costs. Some refuse to cover a Eunos at all. Shop around some more although at 20 your options may be limited.

I hope I've got this right. The Eunos is the import MX5 and being young the insurance companys dont like it. Some companys will be better than others for imports. Go for a none import 1.6 or 1.8 and its worth trying one of the comparison web sites to get a price.

The very cheapest will be a UK Mk1 1.6 94 onwards. This had a lower power engine (usually quoted as 88bhp but rumours are that it is actually nearer 100bhp) which is why it's cheaper. They aren't actually as slow as people seem to think and aren't a bad option if funds are tight.

Just to give another view to the beloved Eunos insurance argument.

I'm 21, no "no-claims" and have a 1.6 Eunos, in a not so great post code.

Fully comp insurance with More Than is £700.

Not bad!

We used Swinton last time, didn't give two hoots it was an import/Eunos.

Insured in Mrs Masers name, 7 years no claims, parked on the road, £180 a year.

Many insurers don't care whether its import or not BUT most of the comparison sites seem to mess it up, you have to call them directly.

I specialize in them and my insurer was initially awkward and I simply gave them a letter stating I was perfectly willing to accept UK spec parts and then they were happy.

You need to speak on the phone to someone who knows what they're talking about. More specialist/experienced insurers know full well that it makea not a jot of difference whether the car is UK supplied or not.

I'm not much older than you, and mine is a 1.8 import.

The prices that the mainsream comparison sites come up with are many multiples of what Adrian Flux, A-plan, etc etc have offered me.

Join up to the MX5 owners club, and then phone either Footman James or Sky Insurance who both specialise in MX5's and Eunos's - they'll ask for your owners club number and then give you a decent discount.

You will then probably find you'll be given normal weighting for your age irrespective of the car.

A-Plan who have been stunning for me recently, were absolutely ste on the Eunos.

They explained that they do not have any underwriters who can give a decent price on import MX5's.

You should easily be able to get quotes of between £300 and £400.

Also consider insuring fully comp as it's only usually 10% extra but gives you lots of benefits - you'll have to insure your car for +£2k too.

Yup, and you should have got it for much less that that... wink

I pay £275 a year fully comp on a Eunos with the good lady on it and only 4 years no claims (as its as much as the no claims mirroring can be) smile

I'm 23 yrs old, got a quote for 1.6 Eunos S Special of £700 fully comp, 6 years no claims. 18 months ago i paid the same with 4 years no claims on 1.8 eunos. Sounds like i need to shop around when the S-Special becomes mine in April next year. Do you think it would make a difference if I wait til 24th birthday (only another month after i would get the car anyway!)

Oops - slight thread hijack whistle sorry!

With ourselves there isn't normally to much variation between the 2. If you want to send me your details I will get someone to call you and go through some quotes with you.
