MX5 vinyl wrap - which colour?
Discussion
Hi All,
I'm thinking of wrapping my old Eunos that's going to be used for track days.
At the moment it's plain old silver, but wanted to go a bit different.
What would you do?
Definitely not going chrome or matt black, seems everybody is doing this now....
I have contacts in the industry so can get the materials relatively cheaply, the actual wrap is pretty straightforward as the MX5 has no awkward angles or sticky outy bits on it.
I can always go multi-colours? Or multi-design?
I also have a vinyl printer and cutter, so can do prints or shapes if I wanted to, although this would add time I don't want to have to make!
Any suggestions?

Theres some excellent cars on Mx5nutz and various sites that have been done based on some of the old Lotus paint shemes - Gold Leaf, JPS colours etc.Look at some old race cars, of a similar style to the mazda - lotus, MG, healeys etc, to pick up some ideas on colour schemes.
also the 'targa miata' looks bloody ace in Martini colours.

I've looked at mx5nutz website, but the 'gallery' link is dead, and the 'members rides' section is huge....
Old fashioned race car sounds good though, might have a think about this sort of thing.
The 'targa miata' style with the 'martini' names is possible as I can print and cut these using the Roland.
I've actually just made a stick on front number plate using some reflecting vinyl and standard print/cut. Surely not road legal being 'home made', but I always have the original front plate should I need it!
What do we think of something like;
Or a whole heap of straight colours from the following;

Gulf colours look great on most cars. Choice of powder-blue or indigo-blue with orange stripe.
Why a wrap though? You can get a full body respray for £1k I think...

Reason for a wrap rather than re-spray;
1) At some point, I will want to sell the car, tearing off the vinyl to have a nice shiny paint job underneath (it was re-sprayed only a couple of years ago), in a good standard colour should make it easier to sell.
2) We have vinyl cutters/printers as part of other stuff we do (although we're not signmakers), so have trade accounts with the vinyl suppliers. The materials for a wrap are only around £60 - £100 for a small car, the bulk of the cost is in labour. Another big cost for wrapping is printing (our printer cost about £13k). Given we already have the equipment, I don't need to bill out any time for this!
I actually have loads of rolls of vinyl already, but not quite enough to do the whole car. The idea is that I'll buy a roll specially for the 'main' colour, and use the other stuff I have for effects. I already have three shades of orange, and about 5 shades of blue, so the stripes won't be a problem. Also have plenty of white to do printed number 'spots' etc.
Personally, I'd go for some sort of Japanese theme using the colours of the flag/historic racing colours - red & white. Here's some inspiration:
Toyota 2000GT:
A Bluebird from the Silhouette series:
Honda RA272:
Nissan Skyline GT-R:
Or...
Maybe go for a retro 60's sportscar colour combo:

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, great!
Some of these designs I'm likely to struggle with, so on reflection, I think it's best to keep it simple with the design, but with some extras added on here and there.
So like this;
But with number spots on the doors, and a few other odd details around the wings etc.
Any other suggestions?

Love the Marlboro colour scheme myself, esp. when the orange is done in day-glo.

A nice Gulf creation would be awesome. Rather than posting all the possibilities up here, just search on google images for 'Gulf Porsche'.
I like that, good look.Only problem is, to make it really 'work', I'm gonna need to change the standard Eunos wheels, lowering springs, proper seats etc.
I think I'd better sign off the budget with Mrs Maser....
