Had my MX5 a couple of years now, it's a 1.6 with gaz shocks all round and handles very nicely, does feel rather underpowered so recently bought a donor car that has a turbo and 6 speed box, will be swapping the bits from one car to another.

I dropped took the manifolds off, dropped the gearbox and Diff out of the good car, will set about stripping the donor car next.

Can you fit the 6-speeder to the Mk1? Does it have a higher ratio for lower revs cruising in 6th? scratchchin

I see a cunning plan...

Been discussed here a few times I think.
Yes, it fits in easily enough into a Mk1 I beleive.

However - ISTR the top ratio is only a couple of percent taller thant that of the 5 speed - plus the 6 speed box is renowned for not having as nice a shift as the 5 speed.

And there much, much, muc more expensive.

I did wonder about it, but I think for the money theres much better upgrades you could make.

Maybe if I already had a very high powered car I would look into getting the 6spd box and a taller finaldrive/diff to match for warp speed crusing.

The main reason I'm using 6 speed is because it's there, I drove a m2.5 sport with the gearbox and liked it, when a donor car came up with turbo and 6 speed for reasonable money I bought it.

IIRC the 6 gear ratios are actually slightly lower than the 5 speed so if you fit it with a dif from a 5 speed you actually end up with a shorter final ratio and a lit of tightly packed gears.
Anyway, 6 speed is only really any use na. With FI you are better off with a 5 speed with the Torsen from the 6 speed so you can make the most of the torque without having to constantly change gear.

Currently driving the 6speed with FI and think it works well, not pushing big power with my turbo set up though.
