hi guys, can anyone give me any ideas.....between 40-50mph in 5th i get a loud whining noise from the gearbox/clutch, over 50 no noise, under 40 no noise! usually i would be thinking "if it aint broke dont fix it" but i use my car daily and the problem is im constanly sat at around 45mph!i know your thinking "just leave the car in 4th" but i do a load of miles so need to get resonable mpg. ive recently changed the gearbox fluid and the clutch seems strong, im reluctant to change the clutch incase its the box. has anyone else ever experienced this with their mx5? its a 92 eunos.

The gearbox on mine makes lots of loud noises, and if you read around you'll find loads and loads of reports of gearbox noise, normally following a clutch change.

Most of these sound like pebbles being poured down a metal pipe, or a sort of grinding / rattling noise, and typically they are loudest when decellerating in gear, although mine does it almost all the time.

After 5000kms of normal driving and about 1500kms of harder driving it still sounds the same, and most people report that nothing ever breaks, so if it's this sort of noise then I'd just turn the radio up and see if it ever breaks. A good gearbox is only £100 and they're pretty simple to fit.

You should also check all the heatshields on the exhaust pipe as they can rattle around if they rust or become loose. There are quite a few of them IIRC, for example the manifold shield on mine had one boose bolt and rattled like mad.
