Wherecould this noise possibly be coming from ?

Hi All,

i have got some knocking coming from the front of the car under certain conditions and its beginning to irritate me!! :

1)When parked and waggle the wheel left to right i get knocking from the front wheels
2)When turning into a junction with a small kerb/lip or corner at speed and the car loads up - that seems to provoke the knocking when on uneven ground.


Now the car was in Wheels in motion for some pads and fluid a few weeks back and i asked them to check out all the bushes etc as best they can and they said they were fine. They did hint that the shocks and springs may be past it? Its on 86k 1997 R reg.

Before that i had new ARB droplinks fitted all round as i thought that was the problem - evidently not !

What else could it be !? I'd liek to get to the bottom of it and sort it before my track day at bedford on the 31st

The track rod ends i'm guessing should be easy to spot as being duff? Take the load off the corner and check for play ? And could i jack the car up and check for play on the wheel for the bearings or is it not as easy as that? Steering rack i am unsure what i can do to confirm the diagnosis

Some of those would be costly to fix i bet and no guarantee of fixing it.. dont wantto give the mechanics a blank cheque

This car used to live in south london with plenty of speedhumps so maybe thats finally caught up with it...

mine does this too - everything off, just wiggling the steering left and right i get a knocking sound. had one track rod end replaced as it was badly worn, i'm guessing the other one is probably due for replacement too. just hope it's not the rack

Is replacing the rack a huge job? I've got a niggly grinding/knocking coming front the front, got some replacement track rods to throw on there, but if that doesn't sort it then I don't know what to look for next.

I had a similar noise for a while (though not when parked), turned out the bonnet stay had come of its clip and was knocking back and forth

Probably not your problem though.

I'd try the track rod ends, cheap and easy to do. Heard more of them going than the other bits too.

Sounds like a plan... will let you all know if new track rod ends fixes it!
