I spend most of my time driving in around 4k to 7k range. Its quite coarse at those rev range, very smooth at 2-4k..

how can i make it quicker, smoother revving?

my car is 1.6 import, is bone standard.

remove any restrictions to air/exhaust flow.
lighten and ballance everything, starting with the flywheel.

There may also be something in the fuel mapping to meet emission standards that puts a hole in the performance.

If you want it to pull better at the top of the rev range it might be worth getting it checked on a rolling road to make sure it's got the right AFR and burning cleanly. Beyond that I think anything else you do would involve mechanical work on the engine, either lightening/balancing it, making the induction and exhaust breath better, and fitting a longer cam. It would be easy to spend a lot of money on this sort of thing though, do you have any budget in mind?

I havent thought about budget yet.
The 7,200rpm limit is high enough, i think my whole exhaust, especailly the manifold and cat pipe is limiting the flow of the exhaust, im going to look at induction side as well.

I like the the feel of revvy nature of rover K-series.

Going start with basics, like exhaust systems, induction, and ecu, before going deep into engine.

yep.. Know what you mean.
Bought a mk1 import for shock testing and trackdays and it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
Results as always depend on how deep your pockets are.
However, I've been having a play and testing with Atspeed and Crazy Horses bits and pieces that I picked up from the racers and others.

1) Clean the injectors, reset timing and lean/or richen the AFM on a rolling road. Cost= £300 Result= Back to 115BHpish and crisper
2) Add in a skimmed racing head with 3 way cut valves to above
Cost= £400 Result Up to 130 to 135 BHp
3) Add in variable timing gear to above
Cost= £150 Result= Ask me next week (expecting 10bhp)

Appologies to OP for hijacking.
The 14 deg BTDC Tweak: I had a servicing day yesterday ( changed fluids & oils etc) & thought id attempt this mod.
My timing wheel has a little surface corrosion & I can't find the marks. Anyone have any advice/ workarounds for this?
Thanks in advance.

The mark is on the outer edge of the main pulley. If you take the undertray off you can get up close. Istr there is a notch in the outer surface, and the timing mark itself is yellow.

The scale to gauge it against is moulded into the plastic cover over the waterpump, it is marked from 0deg to about 20deg.

When I changed my belt and waterpump I took the time to clean everything up and paint in all the marks and scales in White paint, well worth doing

They don't break down all the time - they don't run long enough laugh
