... in that I recently bought an injection kit for my Mk 1.

It sat around for a week or two then I dug out the instructions, had a thorough read, compared the diagram with the actual car to see where it goes .... and that's when I realised something.

My Mk 1 is an RS. It has an engine compartment strut brace.

So the heat shield has nowhere to go. In fact even if I omit the heat shield I don't see how the rest of it can fit.

Am I missing something obvious here, for example a specific kit to get round (literally!) this problem, that I should have bought instead?

I think we are talking induction kits here...

OP - correct?

If so - what is the kit? Is it generic or MX5 Specific?

Yes sorry meant to say induction kit. It's a Powertec SL1 from TPC Automotive, Part No PT23-04. MX-5 Mark 1 1.8.

there's a technical support line number but I've yet to call it.

The strut brace shouldnt be a problem (depending on size of the filter) but if your car has a.b.s then that will make it tough to fit a induction kit. The abs unit and pipework sits (on mine anyway) in the passenger side top corner of the engine bay.

Heres mine for reference - does it look something like that?

Or is there any extra pipework?

The heatshield on mine bolts onto the flat surface directly below the air filter - there is also an L shaped arm bolted here that the MAF is supported by.

Loads of room under the factory brace - and the filter is quite a big one.

Its a st place for it to be as it gets terrible heat soak - im trying to think of a way to create a sealed enclosure, much like the famous 'dave f' kits for the BMW's.

Thanks for that snotrag - I think I'll try removing the top part of the heatshield and see how that goes.

The air filter itself is 140mm in diameter at its widest part; how does that compare with yours?

Here are the two photos from the instruction sheet - note we are looking from the left side of the car rather than straight ahead as in yours.

I reckon I'm jinxed with this car. Nothing seems to fit it! I haven't managed to put the new steering wheel on yet, as the old one has resisted all attempts to remove it so far.

At least the tonneau cover fits. £35 on eBay and looks unused so I was well pleased with that.
