Having read what a bugger it is to change the oil filter on an Mk1 MX5 i was pleasently suprised to find that ours has a remote filter fitted just in front of the engine. Only trouble is that it doesn't use a standard MX5 filter. Does anybody know where this kit may have come from and/or what vehicle my filter may come from?

I have a relocated oil filter and it takes standard Mazda oil filters (though I prefer Purolator filters when I can get them).

The mazda filter I have as a replacement is way shallower and is also smaller in diameter. I could take the filter off but I'm concerned that I won't find a replacement. Unfortunately all the text on the filter appears to be in Japanese.

Take it to a motor-factors. They will find a replacement easily.

I hope so otherwise I'll stuck with a car with no oil in!

They are pretty standard sizes. If all else fails just take it to Halfords and start taking some out of boxes to compare with what you have. It's only the thread & seal sizes that's really important. The Purolator filters I like to fit are longer than standard.

Does your mother have a mk1 with a remote oil filter kit?
