Went to look at a lovley mx5 last night for my mum. Happy with the car etc and was just about to hand a deposit over when I noticed the rear of the drivers seat was sat in an inch of water. I had also noticed it dripping out from underneath the car and it had seeped up towards the pedals.

The owner mentioned he had cleared the drain channels out but only after he'd cleaned the car (which had just come out of storeage). It probably looked more dramatic than it was and we are still interested in buying the car but just wondered if anyone might know what the cause could be? We aren't talking a bit of water this looked like about 3 pints worth!

Ello,

When I got my car, the sills were absolutley packed full of water, you could hear it sloshing about.

The carpets were wet as well, and that was due to the drain wholes near the seatbelt mounts being blocked. A screw-driver in the sill drains cleared them out, and the out side cover of an accelerator cable down the drain holes near the belt mounts = no more water in the car, and about 4 days later my carpets were dry.

Not had a problem since!

Typically it is the drain holes BUT I have seen hoods installed (by alleged professionals) without the rain rail !

Also I've found that the std carpet is pretty water proof so getting it all dried out entails removing the seats and pulling the carpet out then using an Aqua vac and / or removing entirely to let it air dry.

Nothing too horrific but maybe not a 5 minute fix either.

Yup, I had this problem when I first bought my car.........passenger side floor & wall behind seat were soaked. 20swg TIG wire sorted it out in no time at all, just be carefull not to push the rubber flap thingie off the bottom end of the drain tube.

Thanks for the replies. Owner did mention the drain holes were bunged but only notice after cleaning the car.

To dry the carpets out I took out the passenger seat & left the engine running with the heater on full & blowing into footwell......also used the mrs hairdryer on the wall behind the seat thumbup
