If mx5's didn't exist......
Discussion
Chimaera or TVR S. Or 944 Turbo/S2
I would have changed for one already but I have a niggling suspicion they might not handle so well Also I think I would miss wringing the last 0.5 bhp out of it and flinging it around corners. I would end up buried in a hedge if I tried that in a Tiv

Good thread.
I'd like to say the same as NCOT. Those are certainly the 2 main contenders I'd like to update to one day.
But realistically...
The MX5 is like 'my first sportscar', its accessible. if that option hadnt been available to me, I may never have understood that driving a proper sports car is about more than the numbers. The spur of the moment, roof down, radio up, clear road ahead moments.
without experiencing that I would be like the vast majority of people (the typical 'its a girls car' people) who just dont get it.
Thus, I'd probably be driving some form of regular, boring old car, a fast hatchback or something.

The other side of this is, how many subsequent sports cars owe their existence to the Mazda? Would Rover have made the MGF like they did if the MX-5 didn't exist?
What would other sports car manufacturers (e.g. Lotus) be doing if the Mazda hadn't come along?
I don't really like 'what ifs' but if things were the same, sans MX-5, then probably an MGF. And having never driven an MX-5, I'd probably be very happy with it.

Doesn't have to be a replacement...The new addition to Trooper Towers:
She needs a bit of work, as she is a little tatty inside and the idle speed is all over the shop, but a trip to promax should sort that.
Currently running a verified 281.4 BHP and 325 ft/pounds, and I have the link kit and a bigger turbo from the T250 model which should pump it up to close to around 330-350 BHP
Just driven her down from Manchester today and she certainly shifts!
Perfect companion to an MX5 I think.

Ridiculous as it sounds probably either an Evo 5/6 or Legacy GTB.
Odd eh?

I have a GTB and an MX5 which is a great combination, but a single-car alternative would be an STi-RA or Spec-C Impreza.
The other car I considered for the same job when I bought the MX5 was an MR2, still wouldn't mind one to try the mind-engined 'thing' at some stage. A 944 would be nice too but even older 2.5s are a price bracket above in NZ, and S2/turbos much more again.
Difficult one to answer that. My current car was bought with the intention of adding the mods I have because I knewi over these cars after owning a Mk1 for 7 years. If I changed the question a bit to say what car I might have if my current car wasn't available ie they stopped making 5s after the Mk1 then I'd have to say Boxster or more likely Elise.
If the MX5 was never available then I'd probably have started with a Mk1 or Mk2 MR2 and have moved on to a Boxster or Elise by now.

If the MX5/Roadster didn't exist I wouldn't have bothered with anything other than my 4x4's & motorcycles...........it's the only reason I went after a small sports car in the first place.
ETA: I take that back - I've always fancied an AC Cobra but they're hardly 10 a penny are they!
