Hi there, the zip on our Mk1 Hood is not closing. The hood it would appear isn't an original one as the zip goes around all of the edge of the plastic screen.

The old puller snapped a while ago and I changed it to a key ring thing which seemed to work.

My questions are can I get another puller and body and fix it to the zip, remove the hood and try and find someone to sew a new zip onto the hood (I reckon I can get a sailing spec zip which would be more robust), or get a new hood.

If anyone knows anyone around North Hampshire who could assist that would be great.

Cheers

Alex

I think you'll find the problem is that in this type of hood (with tight turns) you can't use a big (strong) zip.

At least thats what I'm guessing as all the ones I've seen with zips around the screen have been small teethed versions.

Get a hood with a glass rear window - they're brilliant. No more unzipping the window to stop it getting creased smile

Ah yes - that would be a problem. My glass window goes down first, flat on the rear deck, then the rest of the hood folds on top. I'll take some photos one of these days, but when up it looks like this:

I have the style bars fitted & they don't interfere with the glass rear screen.

We managed to close it when the roof is half up/down, then tension it up afterwards. It will need some attention but at least it was dry tonight!

That's what I've always done & have read that others do the same.........as a rule of thumb, never zip it up with the roof fully up - or unzip it for that matter.

When I first bought my Roadster, the zip was seperated (end stops had gone) & the stitching had come away quite a lot over one end. I managed to align the zipper correctly, sew up the end stop & sew the zip back onto the hood using black nylon marine thread & a semi-circular sail needle off eBay.

That was 3 years ago & although the hood is shrinking by the second, I've never had any repeat trouble with the zip.

dylan0451/Gizmo - Just to give you an idea of the clearance you'll get from a glass screen on a Mk1:

Of course that's a glass replacement widow section on a Mk1 hood rather than a Mk2 hood which is what was shown in the DandyCars picture earlier in the thread. The Mk2 hood uses a smaller glass section so will fit with more roll-bars than a Mk1 glass replacement widow.

Just to confuse matters further, the DandyCars picture with the tan roof (for Mk1 & Mk2) is designed on the Mk3 hood that folds down without unzipping.

Most replacement hoods with glass screen upgrades don't unzip as its a pain to unzip and doesn't really add anything.

The earlier glass screened hoods unzipped because no one had worked out how to do it without a zip.

The solution was 2 straps to the rear bow and 2 strechy straps to the middle ones.

The Dandy cars pic shows a Mk2 style hood, the Mk3 style doesn't have the 2 seems that run parallel to the doors.

I have a Mk2 hood on my Mk1 but if I were doing it now I'd have put a Mk3 style one on as it looks neater IMO.
