Just bought a new steering wheel for my Mk 1. All ready to go on, looking really neat, much better size for my comfort. All to no avail, because the old one just stays on there resisting all my efforts to remove it!

Any hints? I put some WD40 on and left it all night to soak in but it didn't help.

And before you ask - yes, I did remove the big bolt in the middle first. I'm not that mechanically illiterate! (Well not quite.)

Put the nut back on (stops the wheel breaking your nose when it eventually flies off).
Hit the wheel with a rubber mallet, get a friend to hit it while you tug on it. If all else fails see if you can borrow a hub puller from someone.

Feet on the dash and a hand on each side of the wheel. Wiggle like a b****rd from left to right towards you.

I don't take any responsibility for any broken noses because of this advice...

I had to rig up a lifting strop to a brace that I fabricated across two beams to use to lift the front wheel up on my GSXR. I moved the car forward of the brace to achieve the correct angle (directly pulling away from the column).

I left the nut on a few turns, applied some tension to the strop & gave the back of the wheel a good few taps with a rubber mallet, although a small lump hammer across a piece of wood should suffice.

The trick is to apply even pressure to the wheel & not hang off one side of it wink

Good idea but:

A) all the little sods come out except one! Bent the allen key trying to loosen it.

B) this would mean the new wheel is turned 30 degrees to the left or right as the bolts are in a different place!
