Have noticed a metallic clanging when I've just turned the car on (mk1 1.8).

It's kind of rhythmic, almost as if something is hitting something else at the same point as it turns arounds.

It seems to go away after a bit, or usually if I turn the car on and off it also gets rid off the noise.

It's recently passed it's mot with no advisories and has had an oil change at the same time.

Any ideas what it could be?

Did the clanging appear right after your service/MOT?

I'm hoping it's nothing serious. I'd check the heatshield on your exhaust manifold. It's a thin tin cover and the spot welds on the brackets often give out. It then clangs around with the vibration of the engine.

Afterwards yes, although not right away.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it is the heatshield as that would be constant. This noise will just disappear completely if the car is turned on and off.
