Hi Lazza, I want the revs doon , because I think it is vastly under geared for normal road use in 5 th gear
as I see it, I got 2 options,
1, lower the back axle ratio,
but this will lower the revs in every gear,, which in its self is no so bad,
as the torque of the engine will pull in the lower gears,
2, put in a 6 speed box,
but this will have to have a higher gear than the 5th has now, this will still leave all the other gears alone,.
if a corsa 1.2 can pull 21 mphx 1000rpm
and a 1300/1500 spitfire can pull 22 mph x 1000 rpm
both with a lot less GG,s than the MX, then I think the revs can be lower, also will get better cruising mpg
At the moment it just seems to be far to ..bizzy.. for my liking

When talking about gear ratios - longer gears and smaller numbers i.e. a 4.1 dif will be revier than a 3.6 dif.
It's a ratio to 1 i.e. 4.1 to 1 i.e. 4.1 turns input for 1 turn output.
I think what you aren't taking into account is the torque curve. A Corsa and maybe the Spit I suspect the torque curves put peak torque at lower revs than in the MX5. MX5s peak torque is over 5.5krpm and they don't really have a lot of torque below about 4krpm. If you make the gearing longer you might find you don't have enough torque to accelerate in top gear at motorway speeds.
