Is it wrong to scrap my 1995 Mk1- even if it is for a new Mk3.5??
Now before I get torn apart for even considering it.. a bit about the car: 1995 1.8is with 125k (leather, abs, momo wheel etc) main dealer service until 100k, new koni shocks and polybushed about a year ago, alloy/chrome bits inside, recent new hood with glass screen. Borla exhaust. Sounds good so far BUT the bad points:
Constant loud ticking from HLAs- mechanic cannot find problem- have tried flushes, different oils, new oil pump etc- so frustrating.
Various oil leaks
Stitching on passenger seat coming undone
Broken glovebox
Bodywork- I am running out of straight panels and none of it my fault (honestly): dented bonnet (someone walked over it), scraped wing (swiped by car while parking which then didn't stop), crease in other wing (mystery??) bent and sratched wing mirror (while parked outside MOT station) and most recently badly dented drivers door and panel behind (another 'careful driver' who hit it while parked up and decided they didn't need to leave any details!)
It has been a great car (have had it for 12 years and 100k!) but mazda will offer 3k against a new one- (would probably bite their arm off if it was trade in but scrappage is a different matter). I can't see it being possible to sell for much as it is and if I fix it up I will never get the money back.
What do you reckon??

Hi,

As you've said your self, you've had it for 12 years and 100k, that's a hell of a long stint, but it sounds like it's starting to become knackered!

Maybe as it sounds like you've got some nice bits on it, is recycle what you can back into the MX-5 community, and then I'd say get it scrapped and enjoy the new Mk. 3.5

In this case, I'd suggest partially breaking it - hell even if its just to give away the useful stuff... then scrap it. If the engines got a fault and has done that mileage, it may be worth saying bye to it. Atleast it'll be scrapped to replace with an interesting and worthwhile car... but yeah, take as much off of it as possible.

Any pics of the car out of interest?

You should get £3000 off the new MX5 without the scrappage allowance (or somewhere near). Have a look at internet deals and then ask your locel dealer to match.

Then break your current mx5 - surely all those new bits are worth a fair amount - plus all the other odds and sods people will want.

PS what are the Konis like?? I will take them off you in exchange for all this free advice....

I'd make a post on here, Planet and/or Nutz saying what 'interesting' bits you've got on it.

Then people can come and 'harvest', but only in exchange for their own standard one.

I'd be interested in a nicer steering wheel, maybe the Konis, etc for example.

Things like the hood/ exhaust will sell EASY. Actually, I could be interested in the hood...

I'd love to see you roll in an absolutely bare and tired mx5 to the dealer to pick up a spankers mk3. biggrin

Thanks for the constructive replies. I was half expecting to be burned at the stake!
Mike- thanks for the offer to take the Konis but then your advice wouldn't be free and you wouldn't get a nice warm glow from passing on your knowledge smile If it comes to me dismantling it I will give you first refusal.
Maybe I should go along to some mx5 event and have a cannibalism session where people can swap bits over!
Are there any MX5 specialist breakers who I could sell to? (same effect but a lot less hassle)
You've given me a few more ideas for options and I think I would feel better if some of my car's 'organs' could be reused to let other cars live on....

BCA- nice one- just need to find a mazda dealer at the botton of a hill!
I haven't got any pics at the moment but will try to sort some out.
It's mad- I even spent a couple of hours cleaning it yesterday even though I was thinking of scrapping. The bodywork is such a shame as where it is not dented the paint is in pretty good nick as it's been waxed etc so much.

Autolink in Farham(Southampton/Pompey area) offer a lot of used parts but I doubt you'd get any where near £3k from them if they were interested.

Where do you live?
At PlanetMX5 we have regular tech-days where we do all sorts of jobsfrom fitting light bulbs to cam-belt changes and have even done engine swaps. We've also had a couple of "de-tech" days where we strip salvagable parts off cars that have died from accidents or unrepairable rust. I'm sure there would be plenty of interest in a "swap-tech" day where we would swap goodies off your car with old bits off other peoples cars. You could probably get it all done in a day and make a fair bit of cash this way.

This sounds good, I'd be willing to help dismantle/swap bits over to other cars, I am not convinced much would be of use to me, but I'd like to see serviceable parts, or atleast good serviceable parts go on in life. smile

I'd be very interested in coming to this sort of thing, i could lend a hand but would mostly learn a lot about my car - i'm good at making rounds of teas though!!

In reply to a few questions- the car is silver and based in Bristol.

By the way the Momo wheel is the one with an airbag so I don't know how easy it would be to switch..

Slightly off topic- when I enquired at the local dealer about the new Mk3.5 they could only offer a test drive in a Mk3 1.8 and seemed to play down the differences between the two. I know it is a facelift of the car but wouldn't you think Mazda would get them to talk up the differences?- especially as a few of the car magazines think it is quite a lot better.

Tell the dealer you want to test drive the car of your choice, else you won't be buying one there.

If they say no, go elsewhere smile

Any dealer who wouldn't let me try the car i wanted, wouldn't get my business.

As above.

I would also seriously be interested in your suspension. All of it.

I plan on buying a set of wishbones and polybushing, and I need some shocks too. But I would be interested in yours as they are recently done.

All 8 wishbones and 4 shocks/springs.

And yes, like everyone else, I would be more than willing to come down for a day with my sockets and help you remove them.
