Just in the process of upgrading the audio on the 5. New head unit is in and the standard speakers sound awful.

My original plan was to get hold of some decent door speakers, 2 sets of the Mazdaparts upgrade headrest speakers, some new wiring and some sound deadening for the doors. Obviously that all adds up but that's fine if its going to sound good.

My concern is that a lot of what I've read suggests that even upgraded headrest speakers sound awful? Is this the case? I'd quite like to keep them as I like that they're a little unusual and a bit of a quirk but if they're going to sound awful I'd rather save some money.

I recently got the JVC ones and I think they're pretty good. It's the high frequency sounds that get lost from the door speakers as roof-down speeds increase and lack of bass doesn't stop the headrest speakers solving that problem.

On only one comparison - the courtesy car I have at the minute vs my own - the headrest speakers are a great idea. The stereo in mine is essentially useless above 60mph (I'm not a grasshopper and don't have an ear in my right knee). In the courtesy one though I could hear clearly at 0.8 leptons...

Well I only have door speakers (2 way components with the mid bass at the bottom of the door and the tweeter at the top in the stock positions) powered by a (very old) 2 x 75W amp and I can hear it very clearly even at over 90mph on 3-lane private roads (;)). The speakers cost me less than £50 ex-display and the amp is probably 20 years old so there is no need to spend big money to get adequate sounds, in fact I'd say spending big money is pointless as it won't sound any better on the move.

Cheers for the input. I think I'll start with door speakers and move onto headrest speakers if the sound is lacking.

Mines just got door speakers. They are bright yellow/green in colour though so we're thinking not original. I can still hear the stereo at motorway speeds. Have to turn it up a bit mind. The head unit is an Alpine from I'd guess 6 years ago.

My door speakers don't work, only my headrest ones.
