Intermittent squealing from rear left brakes on mk2 1.6
Discussion
Hi folks
My partners car is a mk2 1.6 mx5 and we've had an issue with a squealing noise coming from the rear left wheel.
The brake pads and discs were changed hoping this would stop (thought that maybe the discs were warped plus they needed a change anyways) yet it still continues.
One thing we have noticed is that during cold weather, the noise disappears however when it heats up a little (say outside temperature of 14*C +) we have the noise every now and then and it's very high pitched.
I have checked for stones (thinking some might have trapped between the pad and disc) but cannot find any, so could it be a sticky caliper? Or what else would you suggest?
Cheers!

Usually its metal on metal of the back plate of the pad on the caliper, take the pads out again copper ease them again and see if that helps. You might wanna also give the caliper a good wire brushing or attack it with a file to get the brake dust off as that could be part of the problem.

cheers, will give that a go over the weekend
Any other suggestions are welcome too, might as well give them all a go over the weekend
Just wanted to add that when i changed the rear pads on my 02 mk2.5 there was a huge build up of brake dust on the calipers and took a lot of cleaning, would be well worth soaking the caliper with brake CLEANING fluid (making sure to keep it well away from the pads and the surface of the disc) before giving it a good scrub, even after this the pads where still a tight fit.Any other suggestions are welcome too, might as well give them all a go over the weekend
Ohh i just remembered something do you have all the parts fitted of the anti rattle springs?

yes we have those, checked them straight away cheers!
Something that I did notice however is the lack of a "backing" plate on the brake pads, there were none on the originals and there were none on the new ones so could this be causing the issue ? (Think it's the shim?)
If so I can make some up at work no problem as well

I dont use any, but they are fitted as standard, so yes you could try that.Something that I did notice however is the lack of a "backing" plate on the brake pads, there were none on the originals and there were none on the new ones so could this be causing the issue ? (Think it's the shim?)

As you know sound is generated from vibration and the squeal is from the pads vibrating at a certain frequency so if you add the shims (anti-squeal shims infact) you will change the frequency and change the pitch of the squeal possibly making in inaudible. Finger crossed
