I currently own a mk1 1.8, but am looking to buy my wife a eunos auto as a birthday prezzy.we have never driven the auto and was wondering if there is still enough driving pleasure in owning one.she has an auto only test but i know she has fallen for the marque.otherwise its a bmw z3.

Autos are great for b road cruising
Make sure its a 1.8, 1.6's are fine on an auto but don't like long hills. I have but a manual engine in my auto (1.6 is 115bhp instead of the 100bhp in the auto) which helps a bit but you have to rev it more to see the difference. I have to stick with an auto due to being a lanky sod with s dodgy left knee, it may be a touch slower up hills or off the mark but on twisty stuff there is nothing in it.

That's interesting. Explains why the courtesy-MX5 I'm driving at the moment (J reg 1.6 Eunos, auto with PAS) feels utterly gutless compared to my P reg 1.8 UK.
It might just be the one I've got but the auto box is a bit 'lurchy' - a bit more torque would probably help this as it wouldn't need to change down so much.

Is there a sports mode on that auto Gizmo?

Not as I've noticed. It's got an O/D button but no other switches near the shifter.

The auto isn't really less powerful as such, they are just set up diferently to give more torque at low to mid revs at the expense of power at high revs.

different cams and lower comp pistons to the manual. More torque lower down the rev range than the manual but less top end. A manual engine in an auto is faster BUT you have to hold the gears and below 3k rpm it tends to kick down more than with the auto motor
