Gaz Gold Pro – PureDrive debate

I’m relatively new to Pistonheads but have found the forum very useful.
As I’ve fitted both PureDrive and Gaz Gold Pro spring/damper sets to my Mk2 (not at the same time I hasten to add ;-)) I thought I might be able to add some objective experience and opinion on them.

Some brief background:

Last summer, with 50,000 miles on my S-reg Sport, I found the handling had gone off with worn dampers. Internet research narrowed my decision for an aftermarket upgrade and I contacted Performance 5 where I found Phil very helpful. It transpired that Dave Turner, who developed the PureDrive kit with Phil, lived only a few miles away so I met him and had a test drive in his Mk2 as a passenger which was very interesting - not least with his skill in driving !

I subsequently bought and fitted the PureDrive set and, not surprisingly it transformed the handling. It’s worth mentioning here that I had intended to track the car occasionally but I’ve wimped-out so far and it’s used exclusively on the road. Over the next 12 months and 5000 miles, I extensively played with the settings looking to optimise the ride and handling. I should add at this stage that although ‘young at heart’ I’m at an age where the this compromise is veering more towards ‘ride’ than ultimate ‘handling’ so I decided to change to another set-up.

Knowing Tony at WIM meant I was interested in the new Gaz Gold Pro offering and in particular the opportunity to choose spring rates. I now have them fitted and selected the ‘Daily Driver’ springs, which are the least firm of five options.

I’m still settling the springs (Tony reckons about 400 miles are needed) before having my final alignment set-up but can say that the Gaz units are far closer to my goal. I would say the range from soft to hard is greater although I think it would be a very brave individual who went to the highest setting on either damper so for me its been the opportunity to have a more compliant ride that has made this set right for me and the missus.

In conclusion, I would say that both choices are excellent and, as with so many things in life, the right one is all down to what an individual is looking to achieve. Both companies have proved very helpful and my recent experience with Derek Gardiner of Gaz has shown his approach to customer service is very good.

I now have a PureDrive set up for sale if anyone is interested (PM me).
