i bet they are bloody fantastic. 9k rpm with that slipper of a car....
Expensive way of getting 220ish bhp to the back wheels though, even if you did the conversion yourself I would have thought it would cost the best part of 5k.and it would be about 240bhp (237 in standard trim)

I can definitely see the attraction of a more interesting engine in the MX-5 - not necessarily a more powerful one (though more power is always nice), I just find the one it has a little bit bland. I mean, it's fine, fit for purpose, but it's not all that smooth, it doesn't sound all that nice and the power delivery doesn't goad you to drive it harder.

I agree with this - if more power is the only goal then the most sensible choice is obviously FI on the original motor, but I can't escape from this idea in the back of my mind of a KL-ZE transplant (200bhp NA Mazda 2.5 V6). Though the KJ-ZEM could also be interesting for someone not scared of something a bit different. Personally I don't think a V8 would suit the character of the car at all but I guess thats just personal taste. It'd be a bit dependant on a lotto win for me though...

For the same money would you not be in the territory for that nutter in the USA who drops a Mustang 5 litre V8 in (a Supercharged V8 too isn't there?)
I'd rather the S2000 donk personally, much more true to the original Mx5 and hopefully it would handle better too.otolith said:

Hmmm... i'd agree with you that it isn't that smooth, but it doesn't sound too bad with a good exhaust and the power delivery in my mk1 1.8i is very nice indeed, 4k and above it really kicks in a begs you to press on more. In that respect I would put it close to my NSX in terms of playing around in the high rev range.GingerWizard said:

The 240bhp is at the flywheel not the rear wheels
Out of the 2 I will always take the FI MX5 the S is a much more refined 2 seater it just does not seem to hit the spot the 5 does
I don't mind the growl at low revs, but like the vast majority of four cylinder engines it's mostly just noise in the mid and upper rev range. My Elise is the same. I like the performance Honda VTEC units, but most four cylinder engines do nothing for me. It's all subjective, though, and people like all sorts of things. Imprezas on loud pipes sound like tractors to me, but some people love them.
It just doesn't make me want to chase the red line, I often find myself short-shifting in the MX-5 even when pressing on and even though there is some more power to be had. It's not that it's a rubbish engine, not by any means, it's just not a special one, in my opinion.

otolith - no 4-pot is going to be particularly musical, for that more cylinders are required. Not to say they can't sound good, but I think the MX-5 is too well-silenced (from intake and exhaust) as standard to sound particularly great being thrashed. Mine definitely sounds best between 3-4k rpm.
