OK, I am going to have to bite the bullet before this winter or when I sell the car and get a new hood on my MX-5.

At the moment it has a tatty vinyl hood - if I can get it at a decent price I quite fancy a mohair one, but I have a glass rear screen that came out of my dad's Mk.2 when he got a new hood recently.

I am tempted to use the Mk.2 screen in my car but I'm not sure how that would work - does it work like a normal Mk.1 hood in a zipped panel? Or is it a complete Mk.2 hood (no zipped panel)? I thought a Mk.2 style hood would be better but I never find them as easy to put down as my Mk.1...

Also I would miss the ability to leave the panel zipped out but the hood up...

Thoughts?

I have a Mk1 Roadster with a heated glass rear windscreen & it zips onto (or rather into) the hood.

The mk2 hood is one piece - you can't separate the rear screen.

Thanks guys.

PnM - I remember the thread (I posted on it I think). It does concern me a bit.

I think I would prefer the option of a glass screen in a zip out panel a la Mk.1 as I have reservations about being able to drop a mk.2 hood quickly...

How do they fit the glass screens in zipped panels? DO they stitch them in somehow?

The zip-out glass screens aren't as good. I think they are smaller and the weight of the glass makes them sag. The weight also makes it more difficult to get the top down quickly as you have to hold the window with one hand while unzipping with the other.
Anyway, get the Mk2 hood right and it's very quick to put down. Mine is literally un-clip & drop - maybe 4 seconds?, couldn't be quicker. Putting it up is just pull up & clip - 8 seconds?

^^^^ It only takes a few seconds to unzip & drop the roof - FFS.....can't you pair hold up a peice of glass?

Lazza, the glass is no smaller than the plastic that will eventually scratch & become a pain in the arse at night........not forgetting the de-misting issues.

You can affix the entire Mk2 roof but there is a modification you need to make (a couple of straps if memory serves me correctly) to stop it appearing to have a sagging effect. By which mean it sags.

The point I was making though is that I can put the roof up & down without having turn around to fiddle with a zip. Having a glass panel means you need 2 hands to unzip. In fact I can drop the top while I'm driving below about 30mph wink

Do they do the Mk.2 style one piece roofs? I reckon I could give up the separate rear screen for a fixed screen if I could guarantee it would drop easily without getting out of the car and pushing it down.
