You'll get a variety of answers on here, and I think it reflects everyone's general experiences.

It will depend on whether it's a 1.6 or a 1.8, and of course how you drive it (even steadily, there'll be a big difference if you cruise at 70 or 80 mph etc.)

For me, I tend to be one of the higher consumption people (I'll put it down to 'it just is') at around 27-30 mpg, I don't think you could bank on much better than low 30's though.

They're not the most frugal of cars, which I'd put down mostly to the gearing personally.

Hope this helps

Hello,

I've got a mk1 1.6 - general hooning it about I saw 27mpg.

On a recent 200 mile motorway run I saw 35mpg - cruising at 70mph.

I do a 60 mile commute each day, mainly on the M3 and I average about 34mpg, ok that's with a 1.8, mk2. Recently, on some drives I've managed 39mpg - my highest yet!

If I drive making maximum progress and full bore starts I get 25-26mpg

If I drive like a saint, gentle acceleration, think ahead so no braking etc... I get maybe 31mpg

So 5 mpg in it!

Depends if they cruise at 70 or 90, so about 25-30mpg I say would be expected

I have an 94' mk1 1.8

I got my Mk1 1.6 down to 17mpg on track hehe

Probably average 25-27mpg thrashing it (in a safe manner of course) on the road and 30-34 cruising. The real killer is short trips and cold starts where they run incredibly rich.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that on the MK1 MX5s if you keep the revs below 4K you would get much better MPG.

I never did any calculations on mine so can't comment on the numbers sorry.

Where's the fun in that? hehe

I forgot to mention up there ^ that my 35mpg on the motorway at 70 was with the roof down, so less aerodynamic :P

I also had to endure a 24mile long section of 50mph road-works, so I'm sure that probably helped!

All depends on what you are paying for it and what it will cost to get it through an mot.Has it just sat there for the last 2 years or has your BIL started it up every now and again.

Budget for a new battery if it has just been sitting there, brakes may be seized on so try them as well.

MPG I can get up to 30ish on a run or low 20's in stop start traffic.

I don't speak MPG but my mk2 gets about 300-340m from a tank.

Its been sitting in the garden with an airated cover over it. I dont beleive it has been started. From a collegue at work i understand i should change the oil and filter, gearbox oil and also diff oil. run the car for 100 miles and then repeat for good. Maybe also change spark plug leads. all of this i have no idea how to do but i know my BIL does. i just hope mould and condensation wont be an issue. as for battery its a given that this will need replacing.
