A friend has seen a really nice MK1 automatic MX5 at Dandy Cars, can anyone recommend them to buy from?

They do have nicely presented cars.

And they do give a decent warrenty etc.

BUT their prices are typically 25 - 100% higher than everyone else's.

I can't comment on the pricing but they are quoted as a recommended specialist in the Haynes manual about "doing up your old MX5".......if that helps!

As Only said, they do have a reputation of being quite expensive but having very good quality cars and backup service. Whether that makes the car worth the money is up to you.

As an example I noticed they are selling a 91 1.6 for £3950, most dealers would charge around £1995 for a similar car.

Or £3950 would get you a 2001 Mk2.5 or a late Mk1 1.8 with leather elsewhere.

If we were talking about Ferrari etc where loads can go wrong and a warrenty would be protecting you from massive bills I could possibly understand people paying more for 'peace of mind' but as the MX5 is a simple car it doesn't make sence to me.

I find Dandy Cars laughably over-priced, however in mitigation, although dealers may want £1999 for an early Mk1 1.6, I doubt it would be in the same condition as the Dandy Cars model.

To be fair that car might be in outstanding condition (looks pretty good in the ad if it's the same one - it's £3795) and they have others much cheaper - a very clean looking yellow 91 J-limited for £2995 for example. Still more expensive than it should be but not massively and if the warranty is good enough that might be enough to sway some people.

Their cars are usually the top category auctions and are in pristine condition. The guys that work there are approachable and very pleasant.

Very rarely do you hear of unsatisfied customers.

Thanks for all the input, the car my friend has seen is a 98 MK1 automatic in sparkle green which looks terrific but £5000 looked expensive. We know you have to pay for quality but havent found another MK1 auto like it.At least from the feedback the cars are good and so is the company.

Cheers Neil

I'd go so far as to say that £5k for that car is not just expensive - it's daylight robbery yes

I've had a bloody good look through my MX-5/Miata (1990 thru 1997) Haynes Manual & can't find a single reference to 'Dandy Cars'.........in fact, I can't find the section "Doing up your old MX5" either.

Where/what are you refering to?

How is it daylight robbery? The car is listed at the price that the dealer believes it is worth - the buyer is not forced or coerced to buy, it is a simople choice - buy or don't buy. If you can find a similar car, in similar condition for less money please post a link and enlighten us all.

The mechanics of a free market are really not that difficult to grasp.

Ok, I used the wrong phrase there, so spare me the lecture on the concept of free-markets.

I find it difficult to believe that one would be unable to find a late Mk1 auto, in good condition for less than £5k.

It remains my opinion that £5k is hideously over-priced for that car.

Thanks for the heads up - the first thing I looked at was the list of publications at the back of my manual & wronly assumed that there was nothing else available on MX5's. whistle

You pays yer money & makes yer choice.

However, I have only heard good things about their cars & quality of service. Peace of mind has a real monetary value, if you have the budget.

I'm not affiliated to Dandy cars in any way BTW wink

I would estimate that car would be sold for no more than £3500 and probably £2995 elsewhere.

That said if you want a sparkle green auto, I doubt there are many others available.

They're just down the road from me and will be giving my MX5 a good service and check-over in the next few weeks once I get myself organised.

The car sales do look expensive, but I don't know how much they're willing to negotiate...
