Hi folks

This is a tough one to describe, as i've only heard the noise once, where as SWIMBO reckons it's happening all the time!! Our MK2 '5 has had a weird noise for a little while, which my FiL (an Engineer of 35 years or so) said sounded like a "distressed bearing".

It gets louder during operation of the clutch and is audible when just idling stationary. SWIMBO describes it as a high pitched noise.

So, my thinking is the Clutch Release Bearing, could anyone give me a better idea of what a duff one sounds like, or if there is an easy way to prove the theory? Also, worst case scenario, how big of a job is it, and how much is it gonna cost us??!

Could just be the spigot bearing, does only occur when the clutch is depressed? If it is the bearing is only about £6-00 but it's about a 3.5 hour job for a garage to remove the gear box etc. Mine failed around Christmas I thought at the time it was the thrust race so brought a new clutch and thought as the gearbox had to come off I might as well have the spigot bearing changed anyway.
