Eunos insurance query
Discussion
Just run a quote through insuresupermarket for a car that we're picking up on Thursday. On the site there is an option to say that the car is a japanese import but on the model otpions there is only MX5, not Eunos. With that in mind, are the quotes that pour out at the end valid? I'm rather concerned about going with one of these only to find out that the car is uninsured should the worst happen.
I've tried Flux who come in at twice what the cheapest online quote was.

Agreed, when you are filling in your form there is a declaration that will be something like this:
Na UK car
Euro import
USA Import
Japanese import
That is the important identifyer IIRC.
Alternatively identify the car through its registration number, that ought to pull up its model/import status, though not fool proof- my insurance company insist that my 1800 BRG is actually a California

I've not had enough coffee this morning, so I may be barking up the wrong tree here.
Euno's isn't the model is it, it just refers to the fact that its a Jap import. Its a Eunos MX-5.
Not quite.Euno's isn't the model is it, it just refers to the fact that its a Jap import. Its a Eunos MX-5.
It was called a Eunos Roadster in Japan, a Mazda MX-5 in Europe and a Mazda Miata in the US.

Ok, just for the clarity here, are we saying that if i go onto insuresupermarket and say that the car is a Japanese import MX5 1600, I can accept one of the quotes and there is no comeback should a claim arise?
The reason for my hesitation is that these prices are coming in at half of what the specialist import insurance companies are quoting hence my concern that the insuresupermarket/confused etc quotes are not really factoring in that the car is an import.

You tried ringing the company that offers the cheapest one?The reason for my hesitation is that these prices are coming in at half of what the specialist import insurance companies are quoting hence my concern that the insuresupermarket/confused etc quotes are not really factoring in that the car is an import.
There are a hell of alot of Eunos' on the road, which might explain it - but if it were me I'd put my mind at rest by ringing them.
And thanks for putting me right about Eunos etc.

Personally I'd only go with a company I've heard of - and maybe I'd avoid some of those too. Cheap insurance is nice but if it means the claims process is rubbish then it's only cheap as long as you don't actually need it.
Sound advice. Its unlikely I'll go with a company I know nothing about but several of the companies quoting much lower than the specialists are fairly well known companies. Going to make a couple of phone calls tomorrow and see what is going on.Frequently the 'compare' type sites gve stupid quotes for 'imports' as they assume we are talking about non uk models such as the FTO etc.
As there is not a single part (realistically) that is different (sunvisors, rear panels etc interchange) they shouldn't be any more expensive to insure.
Get the cheapest online quote then go direct to that co's site and requote.
My trade insurer is ignorant of the similarities so to avoid aggro I simply sent them a letter stating I'd happily accept uk parts instead of Jap ones in the event of an accident and they were than happy.

Thanks for all the help peeps. To clear this up for anybody else looking, it would seem that generally the quotes given on moneysupermarket (maybe the same for Confused et al) do not account for the fact that the car is an import and therefore the quotes are not valid. This may not apply to all the insurers who use that site but certainly applied to the several companies that I spoke to to clarify the situation. Just a warning for anybody going through the same!
At it transpires, Direct Line have provided a very competitive quote so we'll be going with them.
