I must be missing something. But I can't wear a loose fitting hat in the MX5 for all the wind. So do I really need to generate more!

If only there was a way of directing cool air into the footwells of a motor vehicle. Perhaps you could even use a fan to select at what speed you would like the air to enter. For a final trick, if you could find some way to HEAT that air, it would be good to use in winter!

Damn, I've lost the link to the MX5 "Airscarf" made from bits of your nan's hairdryer.

errrrrrm off the top of my head, aircon & heater matrix? confused

By coincidence, I was on the Moss Europe website looking @ this scoop thingymajigger today & their sales pitch includes cool air directed to the foot wells, although I can't see it happening myself: http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.asp...

The whole idea seems a bit weird to me, the roof's down & wind is swirling all over the shop so why anyone would want a plastic scoop sticking out of the top of the windscreen beats the living fk out of me - surely it's going to make a lot of noise too!

Maybe you have never seen a car race, but this kind of air scoop is very common on rally and race cars.

Which the MX5 is NOT.

Each to their own but i think its just kind of unnecessary if you have the top down in the first place, and the air vents in the car at your disposal !

.....which have fully enclosed cockpits and are thus 'kin hot.

Gimmick, nothing more, nothing less in my book.

The point of that is that in a racing car you want to strip out as much weight as possible, including the aircon system. You're enclosed in it (assuming it's a tin-top )wearing a padded suit doing lots of physical work and the windows are polycarbonate with a small hole for air if you're lucky. Therefore you need something to get outside air inside so you don't boil (I used to race an open top Fisher Fury and that would have you sweating your arse off!)

In order to get outside air into an MX-5, even if you've removed the fan/aircon/heating sysetem to save weight is:
Drop the roof.

Sorry if my first reply came across as sarky and unfriendly, I thought you were send it up like when people link to "ultimate mega power-resistor" or the £2.99 electric turbo.

Anyway, you've spent your money on something you want at the end of the day, so it's hardly a terrible outcome. smile
I'd not hold much stock in that photo though, it's from their own website.

Okay, I'll elaborate and not be facetious as my earlier post could have been construed.

Yes, roof scoops are familiar on race and rally cars, but on race and rally cars that have a roof and are fully enclosed. They are in no way the norm on open top race cars. They have no practical need of them.

As Crofty has said, you've paid your money, you've got something you're happy with and see a need for, so fair play to you, enjoy.

Maybe it's just me... but even with the heating set to 'cold' the air coming out of the vernts gets a bit warm after an hour or so's running, might be quite useful!
