I want to get a hard top for my mk1 1991 mx5 ive found one on ebay but my 5 has never been fitted with one so I understand I need to make sure it comes with the bits I need or factor in the price of buying the bits seperately I know you need-
2 raised bolts to hook hood on
fasten clips by seat belts? I think
So is that it or am I missing anything

You will need (according to MX5Parts);

2 x side plates
2 x frankenstein bolts
4 x fixing bolts

Which is all available as a kit from them;

you sure your car doesn't have them? mine came with all the fixings (apart from teh hard-top itself!)

the frankenstein bolts stick up on the rear deck, and i thought all cars had the side catches as they are just part of the normal fittings?

The top of the hardtop uses the same catches as the hood - top of your windscreen.. The hardtop also fixes at the sides just near your right shoulder - they won't be prsent if the cars never had a hardtop shirley?

Have you tried a winter without a hard-top? I've had MX-5s for 10 years and have never wished I had a hard top - the soft-top does a good job and the heater is fantastic.

Thats good to know as i haven't had a winter with mine yet. Although i have bought a mint silver hardtop for mine from ebay - £430 with a padded bag for it at the height of the heatwave - thought it was a bargain ! Mines more for the security on long dark winter nights smile

Mind had the complete fixing kit on also - which was rather lucky !

I had a winter in my last mx5 it was fine but my current roof is fallen apart so I thought I could get a hard top instead of a new roof for the winter & in the summer sell it to pay for a new roof with glass window or keep it depending on how things are.

Your quite right - the normal hood is perfectly adequate for winter. I never wanted a hardtop but my car came with one, and I'm very glad - it tranforms into a Cosy, warm coupe with better visibility, more refinement at speed and more room. Well worth it if it's a daily driver.
