JUst got back from a summer evening pootle, and noticed that the gear stick gaiter and the surrounding plastic were quite warm, i'd go as far as to say hot!

Noticed it the other day as well but wasn't sure if it was just the sun.

Possible cause?

Rubber boots worn on gearstick?

Missing heatsheild or soemthing below?

Cheers

Dan

Can't speak for MX-5s but it was very noticeable in my old Land Rover - if you've driven a long way a gearlever will transmit some of the heat from the gearbox oil upwards - after all, there is a lot of energy going through that box, and if only a tiny percentage comes up the selector shafts / lever it will warm up.

All mine were like that. You could check your rubber turret boots (I think that's what they're known as from memory) but basically, I think they get warm regardless.

I was talking about this yesterday, the stick on my MK1 is ally & it was quite hot close to the gaitor - I guess it must be a common thing in very hot weather.

Check your boots to make sure they are not split other than that not a lot you can do , remember its a RWD car the gearstick in on the box rather than connected by 2 bits of cable .

The whole transmission tunnel on mine gets pretty warm - in fact, especially around the cubbyhole where the ashtray used to be. I expect it'll be lovely in the winter. biggrin

I beg to differ - my left leg felt like it had suffered 3rd degree burns as it rested against the bulkhead firewall.......it's just the hot weather & nothing to worry about.

maybe, but when I changed mine, the transmission tunnel was immediately a lot cooler as was my gearknob. lasted all of 6 months though, as it is beginning to get warmer again

6 Months ago we were in the middle of winter, your gaitor is more than likely still OK.

Noticed mine has been quite warm of late also but I put it down to the hot weather only = see how it is during the next spell of cooler weather (if still getting v. warm, have a shufty at your gear boots and check for splits, they're pretty easy to get-to).

I have noticed this before, and first can be tough to get into when starting up. The boot is pretty wrecked when i had a look at it.

might have to get this kit from mx5parts.
