Passenger airbag on an 04 plate

No, it can't be switched off. Mazda made a baby seat with a transponder that the car recognises and switches the airbag off for you but they stopped making them years ago and they are like rocking-horse poo second hand.
You can cheat though. The passenger seat has an occupancy sensor that tells the car that there is a passenger and if they are a child or an adult. If you disconnect the connector under the seat the car switches off the passenger airbag. The airbag disabled and airbag system fault warning lights will be on but you can ignore that. What I don't know is if this also disables the drivers airbag...
