My Mum has a 1.8 2006 MX5 which is coming up to 3 years old, but has only done around 7k.

I haven't checked but I'm assuming a main dealer service will only be a couple of hundred quid?

At that sort of price I can't imagine there will be much of a saving to be had elsewhere or any point going elsewhere?

Yes, a Mazda service will be a couple of hundred quid. If your mum is a member of the Owners Club then she could get a discount.

However, if you have a local independent garage then that will no doubt be cheaper. If you do this then you can download the Mazda Service Checklist to show them what needs to be done. Or if you feel confident you could do it for her, it's not a major service, just oil changes. Check out sites such as PlanetMX5, NutzMX5 or the Owners Club - there are often tech days advertised on there - there may be one in your region.

Thanks for the link - sparkplugs and air filter too from the looks of it with everything else being inspection items.

At that kind of money it's probably not worth the hassle to save £50 vs. resale and any future goodwill from Mazda.

On a similar note, does anyone know if they offer an extended warranty directly, and if so what sort of money we're talking?

For future info, you can get many MX5 service parts from MX5Parts, many are genuine Mazda parts but cheaper than from a dealer. I'm sure you could do it yourself for less than £100.

I think Mazda do do an extended warrenty but you are best phoning your nearest dealer and asking them.

Thanks, was just looking at mx5parts - odd how a set of plugs for a Mk3 costs £60 vs. £15 for a set for earlier models?!

That aside though, I don't have the knowledge to do it and it's not as if it's an old nail that I can practice/learn on.

I'll give Robinsons a buzz Monday and perhaps try PH in Shardlow as they're one of the only Mazda specialists I know of that's local-ish - presumably even something "simple" like a Mk3 MX5 will have service indicators and computer stuff that needs resetting after it's been serviced that means it needs someone with the right diagnostic box.

For all your service parts you are better going to Autolink.http://www.autolinkmx5.com/mazda-mx-5-parts-8-c.asp

OK I just spoke to Robinsons and they quoted £163 inc for a 3 year service though apparently this doesn't include plugs or anything especially major.

PH Sportscars quoted around £70+vat for the same thing or £130ish for a "full" service with plugs and the lot.

Big difference it would appear!

I need to speak to Mazda to find out if they offer any sort of extended warranty as that may influence whether the service is done at a main dealer or not though equally is it worth it for £80 vs. the reaming any main dealer will try come p/x time.

I'm suprised Mazda haven't quoted for parts. Normally when I take mine they tell me how much it is - from the check list (that I posted up) they know what they will be replacing and how long it takes so they can price it up and tell you upfront what it will cost. Still, you're always going to pay top dollar for a main dealer service.
