if it's 95% road and occasional possible track use then stick with stock Mazda pads. I've never found any better all-round pads. Axiss Ultimates give stronger braking and less fade on track but dust a lot.

Id use the standard pads they seem to be up to the job unlike the green stuff I have just put on mine!

Sounds like you're not happy with your EBC 'green stuff' pads, I have read that they are the dogs - what's up with them?

Many moons ago, back in my motorcycle days, I remember EBC hitting the shelves & also remember being told to steer clear by everyone that had used them.

Mind you, at that time, Yokohama Tyres were made of nylon & were equaly considered to be a step in the wrong direction - Yokohama's have come a long way since then & I would have assumed that EBC would have too?

EBC might well be the dogs but to you really want to use dogs as brake pads?
Seriously though they are inconsistent at best. They might well give slightly better initial bit than stock Mazda pads but the wear rate is variable and I've seen them eat discs (happened to me - fitted greenstuff + new discs on the rear, had to replace the discs again after 6 months and the pads were barely worn). Their quality control seems to be on a permanent holiday. Stock Mazda pads give the best balance between brake feel, bite, wear rate, dusting & fade. I use them on mine most of the time and swap in a set of Axiss Ultimates for track days.

I've always been one for steering clear of EBC - i had red stuff pads and EBC grooved/drilled discs on the front of my s14a 200sx and to be honest i would have felt more in control using a paracute. Really bad.

However my mx5 has come with greenstuff all round and so far other than huge amounts of brake dust they have been doing the job. Good initial bite and no fade as of yet.

I have a new set of rear green stuff and new discs to go on due to the current sent being corroded and locking the rears up! I would say they seem to perform well enough these days - enough for me to put them back on anyway smile

If you don't mind lots of dust then I'd say forget the EBCs and get a set of Axiss Ultimates. They are waaaaaay better than any EBC pads, almost as good as Mintex 1144 which are a fair bit more expensive!

Point taken - Axiss Ultimates on my shopping list it is then!

I've always rated mintex ones althought they tend to squeal a bit IMO.

The pad wear rate issue i've never really noticed and thought wow i need to change brands as they aren't lasting... its a light car anyway so i am surprised people are having wear rate issues!

Also a fan of Mintex pads, though I have to confess I haven't yet tried on a '5.

MX5 Parts.

Mintex are good but are expensive.

As for the Greenstuff wear rate I did say that it was variable. On my old Mk1 I used Greenstuff for about 4-5 years. Some pads lasted ages whereas others were gone in no time at all. Some didn't cause any dusting whereas others almost looked like they were smoking when I brakes. They just aren't consistent enough to be able to recommend them. You might get a really good set but there is a good chance that they will be rubbish.

I would heartilly recommend Axxis Ultimate pads, they're very good, especially with sport brakes.

Try Ste at 5-speed for some as he seems to be one of the only ones getting them at the moment and they're not too bad in terms of cost. Plus, he's a pleasure to deal with.

EBC are better than they used to be.

I just tried EBC yellows, my 1st trackday with them. Easily just as good as Axxis Ultimates that they replaced.

actually mintex are only expensive on the rear! (almost 100 notes!) nuts

and with a liberal greasing (slider pins, not pads!), i've managed to get my axxiss to stop squeaking smile

I had greenstuff discs and pads on a Fiesta, the pads didn't seem to wear at all, didn't dust in the slightest, but actually ate discs...

Who are 5-speed? I cannot find any details online, do you their web address or contact details?

Thanks in advance.
