Does it have an ABS light on the dash that lights on startup?

There are various tests you can do easily to find out, like stopping on gravel for instance

Look under the bonnet. The ABS cars have a big distribution block up by the firewall on the passenger side. You could also look at the wheel-hubs to see if they have a toothed wheel for the ABS sensor.
I'm pretty sure any 94+ Mk1 UK 1.6 won't have ABS though.

However, I'm 99.9% certain that the only UK mk1 that came with ABS was the 1.8iS (assuming it is a mk1, that is?).

ETA: the distribution block Lazza mentions is a brass regtangular thing with 3 brass pipes coming out of the top of it, bolted in with brass nuts.

He said '97 so it is a Mk1.

On my Mk2.5 the distribution block is a big square lump of stainless steel. I didn't realise it was brass on a Mk1 (never actually seen the ABS block on a Mk1).

Wait for a suicidal squirrel to run out in the road and decide it is his time.

My car doesn't have it, ('91 MK1 1.6) but fortunately I managed to stop before squishing him.

I would have thought that jumping on the brake pedal really hard would be the quickest and easiest way to tell if it has ABS?

That might not be appreciated if you are test-driving a potential purchase wink

Maybe not appreciated, but I always give the brakes a proper thump when test-driving to see whether it stops in a straight line or not. (If the owner's in the car I do warn them first to check it's OK!)

I have a 98 Mk.1 1.8iS which has ABS. I am pretty sure - but not certain - that this was the only UK MK.1 to come fitted with ABS.

Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong anyone!

You are right in that the 1.6i and 1.8i do not have ABS and most special editions are based on those but I believe there were some specials based on the 1.8iS - I think the Calfornia is an example. A lot of the JDM specials were based on the top spec though so might well have ABS.

I did that when I was test-driving my 5, just gave the owner a warning that I was about to test the brakes to save having to clean the passenger seat...

Might apply to a private buyer but in my experience dealers just put you in the car and send you off on your own, then you can do what you like. Perhaps I just look trustworthy.

Airbags.
if Airbags are fitted they always have ABS. (but not necessarily the other way around)
imports mostly yes after '95, uk mostly not.

Stamp on it, then you know if the the brakes are any good anyway. I doesn't need to be violent, just progressively harder braking until you reach the limit of grip. (fairly easy at 50-60mph to reduce down to 30 b4 locking it up) Wet day even easier.

As mentioned you should have the ABS light on the dash at start up. Otherwise, look for the block, mine is at the bottom left hand corner in this pic

You mean bottom right, right? wink

Just a note to say that the one on the mk 1 doesn't look exactly like that (it's brass for a start), but it's in the same sort of location in the engine bay.

Nope, my 1997 S-Special had and airbag and no ABS
